Subject: V8 TB idle problems
IP: Logged

Message:
I just installed a stock V8 TB and experienced that the idle is much too high. The thing wants to stay at about 1400 rpm and hardly comes down.
Has anyone experienced this? What can be done about it?

Check the cable and make sure that it is loosely routed through the engine bay. Also, check the bores and see that they are clean and the flaps close all the way.

The cable is OK and I checked the bores... It seems to me that it runs way too lean in idle and therefore refs too much. Sometimes it will go down some and then spin up again without me doing anything.
When I push down the accelerator, the egine goes up nicely but when I release the pedal, it hesitates to go down... (Sorry my English is probably not the best - I am from Europe)
I gather that none of you had the same problem so I will just take the thing off and check everything again.
Thanks for the hints and I appreciate any other help you might have.

I was just thinking what would it do if there was something wrong with one of the sensors? Possably the throttle position sensor? Did you use the same ones you had? Just a second thought, though I am not a mechanic.

Check that return spring. It makes those butterflys shut again when you let off the gas. If it is not strong enough, worn out, or missing...etc., then that could be your problem.

When I put mine on, I had reset the pcm, and let it idle for about 2-3 minutes, w/o me doing anything but drinking a beer. And it still idle funny for about a week, then it calmed down. I would check all your sensors, your gasket, that return sping, and if the truck is not to unmanagable, drive it for a few days and see what it does.

I used the same cable as with the old one. I had to do some mods to the linkage, but I don't see that causing problems. The reutrn spring works OK too. I will check the whole thing tomorrow and hopefully find something wrong.
I am still suspecting that somehow there is too much air getting in at idle... will start from there.

I had the same problem with mine,

I had to get a new IAC on mine.
Then i think you have to do some
tunein to it, not sure tho, some shop
fixed the idle problem. Mine used to run all the
way up to 3k before coming back down.

Ok For the Two of you haveing problems.

I recently (2 months ago) did the V8 TB change out. I noticed a higher rev than normal, about one month after having it installed, about 1000 miles, it went to a lower idle. Now it has a smoth low idle.

If i can be of anymore assentance let me know.

Catch me come later!!

Does anybody know how to adjust the IAC valve? This seems to control idle air and could cure my problems... Since I am in Switzerland I don't have too many Dodge shops around and need to do things myself...

Andy,
There is no adjustment for the IAC vavle. I would suggest that you pull the IAC from the throttle body (leaving it plugged in if possible) and lay it in plain view. Take note of the position of the plunger. Then turn the key to the on position ( caution: do not start the vehicle! ) If the IAC has not been damanged you should see it adjust itself to a different position than when you pulled it out.

Make vary certain that you do not push the plunger in, this will damage the unit.

If it checks out ok, then double check your mod work on the cable to see if it is pulling the plates open.

I am just back from some more work on the TB and test drive:
I deinstalled everything checked every gasket, screw, sensor, and so on, took the minimum throttle screw back some and reassembled the whole thing.
Then I reset the PCM again and went for a little ride.
It seems to be better now, idle settling at 800-1000 rpm. If I just rev it in neutral it is still slow to come down. I think that indicates it beeing still too lean.

I had a hard look at the IAC and tried to work the plunger somewhat. I gather that might have damaged the part?

If things do not get better with time, where to get a new IAC and how much do they cost?

The zone carrys "wells" brand and says they are 30 bux. I personally would prefer the mopar brand, but Im sure they would stick it to ya w/o lube on the price. I was instructed not to play with the pintle on that IAC so that might be part of your prob, also, while you have/had it out, is the hole it goes in clean?? No carbon build up, etc. If their is, that will be part of your problem.

I think everyone's truck runs differently and reacts different to the mods. When I first did my TB swap, it didnt run higher rpm like yall are having trouble with. It just stayed the same range. The TB cable I had was new and the pedal was a little stiffer, until the line smoothed out the new casing. Actually, i had the problem that my truck was running too rich for a while. It smelled like gas horribly and when I would let off the gas sometimes, I would get fuel igniting and popping in the manifold. One thing I did that helped out some, I think, was my FMS Injector mod. I think that smoothed out the TB and got rid of it running rich, since these injectors are more precisly calibrated for fuel delivery.

Also, another question. Have you relocated your IAT Sensor? That will give you a cooler air temp and will help richen up the fuel mixture.

thanks for the info. I think I might want to get a new IAC if things don't get better. The one I installed now is clean and I also cleaned the TB. It was a used one so I cleaned all the old stuff off.

Texas97
I haven't relocated the IAT... I am a bit afraid of doing that since I only want to enrichen the mixture in idle. As soon as I open the throttle, things seem to be fine.

The truck is now driveable and maybe things settle down as the PCM learns the new situation. If not, I go and take the thing apart again and install a new IAC...

nosdart68, that IAT relocation will work on a stock engine, It doesn't matter what modifications you have. That is one that is usually done at the begenning of the mod list.

I have a 2000 Dakota sport 4.7 M/T that has developed a curious problem. When I drive down a bumpy road the engine will race to around 3000 rpms. I can't seem to find any information on this. Any ideas?
