Subject: Next logical step? RR
IP: Logged

Message:
Needs some opinions please,
00 Dak CC V-6 Auto (3.92)
So far I’ve removed the clutch fan, added a 180 T-Stat, K&N drop-in, cold air induction, V-8 TB, plugs, wires, Brass cap & rotor & a FlowMaster Delta 50 Muffler. I have fair low-end torque & great acceleration from 3000 up.
I’m looking to enhance the low-end torque
I’m thinking the next logical step would be to add 1.7 Roller Rockers (Crower)
Looking for pros & cons and other possible ideas in the price range ($350)
Thanks for any inputs
Gary

I love my 1.7 RR's but they won't help you under 2k rpm, they don't hurt low end. I think they are a much better choice than headers.

Looks like you have a 3.92 rear end, you should have pretty good take off.

You might look at a underdrive crank pully

From a standstill (when my tranny doesn't slip and i red-line) the acceleration isn't too bad, but the difference once i hit 3 Grand is so significant that i was hoping that the Rockers would cause it to breathe and motivate better.

Dan:
Would the pulley really make that much difference, i read with great interest your results from the roller rockers, that's why i'm leaning heavily toward them next
Thanks again

I can't speak for the pulley as I haven't done this, but from some of the things I've read here it sounds like cheap low end HP.

Something I did to get rid of the take off hesitation was to port my V8 TB (cut the TQ step out of it) If you still have your old V6 TB get it out and work the throttle by hand watch the blades when they open, you will see the blades have to move almost a 1/4" before they actually start to let air in. now open the blades and take your finger and run it down the side of the bore feel that bump............TQ step !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a web site you can study this porting project
FAST4X4

I can also email you some photos of mine if you want.

Well-- as mentioned earlier-- the 1.7s won't lose anything below 3000, but not much of a gain either below that RPM.

They will however, start to pull around 2800 rpm, and 'really get on the pipe' so to speak (in 2 stroke terms), at 3000 rpm and pull smartly to 4600-4800 rpm...

Though you may not linger in the 3000+ rpm frequently now, you will once you get the rockers :) The increase makes it more fun to drive, plus 3rd gear will become your new best friend...

They are available now-- Crower has 'em in stock. I still have the lowest prices :P

kota62,
i too have the 1.7 rollers. i put them on about 25,000 miles ago and have performed wonderfully. They are a great mod but like everyone else has said... they dont really do diddly under 2500-3000 rpms. But once you hit 3000 rpms its a nice reaction. It seems as though you should have a pretty good take off if you have 3.92 gears. The only real thing you could do is just get different gears because there are really no low end power mods for a V6 (except maybe nitrous oxide). What size tires do you have? you could get a shorter diameter tire and that would help out some.

edelbrock intake, modified manifold, headers, flowmaster, 24lb injectors, mp throttle body, 1.7 rr, msd 6a, msd wires, blaster 3, b&m shifter, shift kit, coilovers, drag shocks, ladderbars, panhard bar, 150# coils, electric fan, oil cooler, 180 thermostat, autolite 3923, corbeau seats, slicks, mojo

I have put the power crank pully on mine, and did notice my 60-70 bux worth. Install is fairly easy , take the 6 bolts off that are 1/2" in size. Tips: break bolts loose before you remove belt, and you DO NOT need to take off the huge center bolt.

I too have 1.7 rockers. They come on at about 3k. If you need more low end and you are using a 3.92 then the next step would be a 4.11. Gears is the best way to pick up low end. But.... they are expensive to have installed and gas milage goes down the tube. If you go with gears you may think about a posi. I added one to mine, only 3.55 gears. Should have gone to 3.92s. I just wanted a little better street performance and to keep my gas milage.

Just the RR kit is all you need

I don't think The Rev limiter will let you over 5500 rpm unless you get a flash

Hello to all again:
I just received & installed my Underdrive crank pulley (ASP), took 30-40 minutes (thanks for the install advice Dale)
I found it at TruckPerformance for $57.00 to my door, got the belt (Kelly brand) for $17.00 from AutoZone. Very easy mod to perform, and it does help a bit on the low end.
Have decided to wait on the RR's til my mother is firmly on her feet again (Financially speaking)
Again, thanks for all the advice, & I look forward to learning even more from you guys & gals... :)

i finally got the 1.7 rr's installed.. thanks to dakota dan for pointing me to them and sam from socal for the great price(better than crower) and fast delivery of the rr's.. i thinks it's the best mod soo far for me. i have the 3.92 gear and before i would hit 3k before i would feel the power band but now i can't feel it at all--> seems it's there all the time.. with normal driving and really good acceleration i'm now changing gears at 2.2k instead of over 3k. actually it feels like i'm driving with a V8 instead of the 6. i would recomend this mod to everyone

other mods are 7"cold air intake from intense, moved ait, adjusted tps, accel wires autolite 3923 plugs, flowmaster 40 exhaust and 275-60-15 tires... next mod is V8 tb :)
