Message: Does anyone run an after market cam? if so who has the best one and what compression ratio are you running?
I have a 2002 extracab, which is druven 80 miles to work and back each day. Most of that is on the interstate. I would like a little more power and preserve as much mpg as poss.
only mod so far is a homebrew cold air intake, but will do more as funds become available.

Message: www.Hughesengines.com has a FAQ section on choosing a cam. They say that using one of thier cams that is 5 degrees smaller than the stock one will still give more power through out the power band. A smaller cam will always give better gas mileage. You could probably still get better mpg with a stock or 5 degrees larger than stock because of the added torque of thier fast lift rate. The mpg increase from the added torque will be the result of it allow you to accelerate up to speed with out being on the gas pedal as much. The stock compression ratio is good enough for any cam that you would want and still drive that much. Cams that are big enough to need a bump in compression wouldn't like commuting and would eat gas.
