Subject: Please help!!!! IP: Logged
Message: I'm having a problem with my '98 V6, auto transmission w/ air (50,000 miles) and hoping someone here can offer a suggestion before I have it (gasp!) towed to a repair shop.
I went out to start it this morning and found a dead battery. The enging didn't turn over at all, but there was enough life to run fans, radio, etc. I shut all that stuff off and tried a few more times and finally got it to wake up and start. (The truck had been sitting, unused for two weeks prior while I was out of town.)
The engine ran a little rough at first, but after revving it a little, it smoothed out. As soon as I took my foot off the gas, it died. Restarted, ran ok when giving it a little gas, then died again when I let off. Repeated this several more times with the same results. The truck's voltmeter was indicating about 14V when the truck was running.
Over the past month, or so, I was noticing an ocassional miss in the engine when travelling at highway speeds. Usually happened when going 65 mph+ and uphill. A related problem?
Anyone have any ideas? I've always been under the impression a fuel pump either works, or doesn't, so I'm guessing it's not that. Could the battery thing be a coincidence, or related? Could a short in a cell cause this? Fuel filter maybe (where is that located on this truck)? Distributor, or other electrical system problem?
Please help if you can!!

Message: Dude I had the same problem once, It was the battery, for some reason this happens to daks alot, take you battery to a local auto parts store and have it tested for you, Sometimes if your batt has a a bad cell or somthing it will start up and then after ward it will die, but check the battery first, even if it says 14 volts, it still could be bad, get the battery tested asap. I bet that is the problem, the fule filter is not the problem and it is located in the tank, you dont want to change it, too expensive, also you might want to check for a broken ingnition wire, spec it out.

Message: Mine idles ruff after It has sat even 24hours. I let it idle for about 2-3 min, then take off.
Fuel pump and filter is a combo, in the tank.
Might want to have the injectors cleaned, or swap to 97 mustang 4.6l injectors.
My truck one time had a prob that once it reached a higher temp, it would die unless you kept foot on the gas. It was some "warmup relay". Luckly it was under warrantie at the time.
Last but not least, If in doubt, give it a good tune up, with brass cap/rotor, good wires, and autolite 3923 plugs.
Service manual calls for tranny service between 30-36k miles. Well worth it, if you do the work yourself.

Message: that voltometer is reading 14 volts output by the alternator... not the battery. I think you should just give it a good tune up and buy a battery.
oh, and the filter is in the fuel tank and doesnt need replacement unless there is a known contaminate in the fuel tank

Message: Mine started acting up the same way at about 60K miles. It cranked slow then when I got it running it ran ok. This went on for about a week. Then, one morning, I went out, did the slow crank thing, but once it started, I took my foot off the throttle and it died. Re-fired the engine and it did the same thing. I have a friend I work with who has his own business on the side selling vehicle batteries. He tested it and it showed really weak, hardly any surface charge. I replaced it and haven't had a bit of trouble with it ever since. If I were you, I'd go to Auto Zone or Advanced Auto and have the battery load tested. Be prepared to buy a new one before you get there though.
