Subject: Jet Stage 2 chip: Effective?
IP: Logged

Message:
Are those Jet computer chips for Dakota V-6's effective?? Are they safe for the motor?? I was thinking of buying one but i don't want to waste money if they don't work. I already wasted 300 bucks on a high flow cat back system that sounded like crap and made it actually lose power. I took it off , it sucks so much. So i'm kind of apprehensive now about the after market. I do have headers on it and they helped a bit but not much.

That really depends. I've heard that it doesn't help on some, but on mine it did. I think it depends a lot on what you already have done to the engine, and your driving habits.

For one, I did loose some low-end power (below 1500 RPMs), but I made up for it in mid-range and a powerband that now goes significantly higher (Between 2500-4800RPM it moves). The idle quality didn't change much, but it did make it so I have to run -at least- 89 octane to avoid pinging. Gas milage did go up slightly on the highway, offseting the cost increase in gas almost exactly.

Some people say that the computer chip will eventually learn that the Jet is there and counteract it. I don't see how that could be. The chip really just alters the incoming sensor signals. The computer will come to -expect- those altered signals, which is true. However, it will also advance the timing and adjust the mixture -based on the altered input-, until the chip is removed.

Installation is simple and takes about 1 minute without tools. The manual says you have to remove the computer from the fender wall, but I don't see why and didn't on mine. If you keep your eyes open, you should be able to find a chip either here or on Ebay in the $100-$150 range. I paid $125 for mine.
