Subject: harmonic balancer bolt

Hey all,

94 Dakota, 3.9L: What's the secret to removing that giant bolt holding the harmonic balancer in?? I got the front part of my engine torn down to the point of the balancer, but I can't get the balancer bolt off because there is no obvious way to hold the crankshaft to keep it from turning. The repair book (a Hayne's book) suggests to jam a screwdriver in the flywheel gear but I don't feel like having to replace the flywheel when I break 10 teeth off of it. I tried putting the tranny in 1st (it's a stick) and having someone hold the brake pedal, but there's enough slack in the driveline to make this a non-effective way to do things.

Any idears?

Easiest way is an impact gun, it will zap it right off.

There is one other way, Is the engine in the truck? Will it crank?

Pull the efi fuse so the truck won't start. Put a socket and a long breaker bar on the crank and turn it so that the handle end of the breaker bar is in contact with the ground on the drivers side of the engine. Turn the key to crank the engine, just for a second, just bump it. The garage floor will hold the braker bar in place and the torque of the starter will break the bolt loose. Just stand clear when you do this in case the socket or breaker bar snaps. I've broken bolts loose like this lots of time when there isn't enough clearance to get the impact gun on there.
