SloDak39: I feel for you. I know it's not as easy to just get rid of something you owe on. I also understand that not all vehicles are created the same (should) but I believe it's luck of the draw. Best of luck either with your existing dak or another.

I have 187700 miles on my Dak and only now does it seem to be losing power . There is something wrong . I have a small sports car that I race in Scca road racing and the Dak tows it fine . I live in Atlanta and I make it through the North Georgia to Rockingham . All of the posts that say "keep of list of everything you do " are right on . If they still won't help call Clark Howard WSB radio AM 750 in ATlanta . He has a web site . He will know how to put the heat on . Something else you can do is get the feds involved . If it's stalls at the wrong time it's a safety problem . Definatly clear the PMC and make it learn how you dive again . It should never stall , never ever ever . If it does somethings wrong . Good luck

RE: 2001 Dakota inconsistent rpm drop

I have a '01 cc dak with a v6/stick. I notice while shifting when it is cold the rpms drop like a ton of bricks. However, once it warms up they take forever to drop (especially at lower rpms). To make things weirder, after it is warmed up, the rpms sometimes fall really fast as I go from 2nd to 3rd. So fast I almost can't shift fast enough! I tried to reset the pcm and clean the throttle body, but that seemed to help a little only for a day or so. Has anyone else had this problem? Any solutions???

I also have a 2001 v6 and the only prob I have had is my tranny. I have an automatic and ever since I put on my f and b tb It shifts funny and I have adjusted the tv cable once already but just think that I cant get it right, Im gonnna try and mess with it again today but other than that it runs fine. I got a great deal on it a year ago this month with only 8k miles on it!

I've got a 01 Sport QC 4x4 5spd manual and haven't experienced any of those problems, aside from the rough idle (nature of the beast.) I wonder how many people here complaining about power have ever owned a truck before? The 3.9 is a stout engine. It wouldn't have lasted this long if it wasn't.

Can't speak for the auto owners, but for the 5spd's:

1. Unless you're driving on a flat freeway above 50mph, forget that there is a 5th gear. Having a 5 speed transmission on a truck is ridiculous. Not too long ago most trucks had 3 speed manuals, or 4 speed, but 1st was a 'granny gear' for getting a heavy load rolling. Normally, you'd start it in 2nd.

2. Don't look at the shift light on the instrument cluster. It's wrong. It's geared towards fuel consumption, not power. If you're looking for power don't think about shifting until you hit around 3000 RPM's. My light wants me to shift well below 2000 RPM's, which is ridiculous.

3. Learn to downshift. Need more speed, downshift. Can't pass anybody in 5th gear. In 4th I can take it up to about 80mph at 3000RPM and do it very quickly. Definitely fast enough to pass just anyone I have to.

In general, don't upshift until at least 2500RPM. You'll notice a big difference in your truck.

This sounds too easy a fix for the stalling problem but its cheap and worked for my 2001 3.9L.

Mine would stumble off idle and miss pulling away from stop signs. It wasn't the fuel filter cuz it would rev fine.

I changed the PCV and that was it.

Maybe you could spend the 3 bucks and be lucky like me.
