I have a Haynes manual and it says how to adjust the bands. There are two adjustments. You torque them and then back off a bit.

I have a manual that shows how to do it too...I just don't comprehend why you would torque something down...then back it off again. It just does not make any sense to me. Maybe I am just being silly but it is as clear as mud to me. Any comments???

I adjusted mine when I put in the TransGo kit, so I can't say if it did anything.

As for torque it and backing it off, it's a close tolerance and when you torque it it's setting it to a nominal reference point. The backing it off a specific number of turns, it's more accurate then using a feeler gauge.

If you had 3 guys tighten a bolt you would have 3 different torques, in doing so your reference point would be different.

I hope this helps

BE CAREFUL WITH BAND ADJUSTMENT!!!!!!!!!

My dad did a band adjustment on his 318 Ram, and the Haynes Manual was wrong!! It gave him a number to torque it to and then back off 2.5 turns, but the problem was the torque was too large to back off. It really messed up the shift point on the tranny. It took him forever and a whole bunch of headaches to get it fixed, and its still not back to how it was. Just a word of caution. Make double sure you are right before you try it.

I agree with the last post BE CAREFUL!
Plus before you do anything you must find out what Tranny you have. I have a 97 Dakota with the Auto in it and I did the band adjustment no problem BUT Dodge made 3 Different Automatics for that year. It took me to call the dealer tell them my VIN# and then they told me exactly what tranny I had. In the book you have, you will notice 3 different torque # for both ajustments thats why you must find out what tranny you have. So just a heads up

Also you whated to know if it gave me anything as far as HP no. The only thing it is suppost to do is adjust for ware that's all.

J-R-M did you need any special tools for the tranny band adjustment? I have a '01 with a 42RE auto tranny. The shop manual will suggest using a special tool for the front band, but is it really needed?

Sorry for the long delay

No I didn't need any
The front adjustment is a pain in the rear because of where it's located but other than that it was easy.

Oh and do it on a vehicle lift not on the ground.
