Message: There is something wrong with my car, and I was hoping that someone on here might know something about this problem. A few weeks ago, I started getting a low pitched hum (more like a vibration) when I executed low speed turns (such as turning into a parking space). On my way into work this morning, my car was humming the whole time, but it is still worse on the low speed turns. The hum seems to change frequency (higher) with higher RPMs. I noticed this because it seemed to get higher until the car shifted gears, then it would drop to a lower frequency and start climbing again. Just for reference purposes, I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota, 2WD, V6. I would appreciate any help you could provide.

Message: I know this is probably a dumb question but I'm gonna ask it anyway. Have you checked the power steering fluid? What you are describing sounds like a resonance from the power steering pump low on fluid. Especially since you say you atarted noticing it when making slow speed turns in a parking lot. I'd check on the fluid level soon and make sure it's topped off then check it again in a few days to make sure there isn't an unnoticed leak.

Message: Im with you Dakota39M, this sounds like power steering. I would check the fluid. You may have got air in your system.

Message: Would power steering fluid make a humming sound when I'm driving down a straigt stretch of road? I may have left the problem going for too long and now it just hums all the time, but you guys are the experts.

Message: The hum is caused by the power steering pump, not the fluid. If the fluid is too low, the pump will burn up. As Jim noted, the belt turns the pump whenever the engine is running, so the hum would be there all the time if that's what the problem is...check the fluid ASAP and hope that the pump isn't fried.

Message: I think you guys were right. I put some fluid (it said power steering, but I suspect that it was Transmission fluid) in the reservoir and the humming stopped. I spilled a lot of the fluid, however, and there is a lot of smoke coming from the engine compartment. Is power steering or transmission fluid dangerous if it is being burned off by the engine block?
