I had a strange clicking noise on my 93 dak. It happened right at 2500rpm but i could accelerate past it. Well, recently I had to replace my oxygen sensor in order to pass smog. Not only did everything run smoother, but the noise went away. Weird, but true.

I think it is just the valves, mine clicks a little upon start up. Also check to see if the exhaust manifolds are tight. I hade a stud break off and it was letting a clicking sound out.

Mine does that too, usually after a cold start.

It goes away after a few minutes of driving.

I had that on my 94 dakota V-6.
It clicked or tapped at idle. Sounded like a diesel engine. The tapping went away when driving.

It was the timing chain. But it was also covered under warrenty (7/70) I had it fixed when the truck was under 60K...
Not sure what it would run you now... But I think there was a service bulletin on itso there was a differnet part or gear used with the chain...

My 95 dak had a chain slap that got so bad I figured that I had better replace it. Dodge wants around $707.00 to replace the chain, then i went to Goodyear they only wanted $385.00 to install the same parts. Needless to say Goodyear got the job. If I had the right tools I could have done it myself, it's not all that hard.

MY 97 3.9 had the same clicking noise. Actually it had two clicking noises. The one was one of the exhaust manifold bolts came loose, and continues too, every once in a while i have to give it a half a turn, tried some different lock tite stuff, didn't work, not a big deal. The other clicking is somewhere in the engine, don't know where, don't really care, it does not hurt the performance, it also has 115,000 miles, and runs like a champ.

Believe it or not, there are a few people here that have the right idea. It is the timing chain. On the 3.9L 1990 - 1998 dakotas, says the TSB, the timing chain does not have a tensioner built in to it. The TSB goes on to state:

"A Rattling or lifter type noise coming from the front (chain case) area of the engine."

It definately sounds like a lifter rattle (trust me, I had it on my 92 3.9 magnum). The parts can be purchased very very easily and the job isn't all that difficult. The time chain tensioner (part number 53021195AA from your dodge dealership) retails for about $38.10 USD (thats how much mine was) You're going to need a new timing case gasket, a new water pump gasket, and a new front case seal. All together, from most auto parts stores, it will run you anywhere between 20.00-25.00 USD for all three (I got mine at a NAPA). The timing chain and sprocket package (as you've got to replace these) are the most expensive coming in at 60.75 USD from my local auto store (Pepboys).

You've got to pull the power steering pump, alternator and A/C compressor to get to the timing cover while the engine is still in your truck. Then you'll need to pull the water pump. grab the crank pulley of the dampner. Then, line up the four cylinder at TDC (If you don't know what this means, I would suggest NOT performing this operation.) Once you've exposed the bare timing chain, camshaft sprocket, and the crankshaft gear, you're going to want to remove the cam sprocket with a set of flat head screwdrivers. There is a thrust plate and an oil tab. Remove these and replace them with the timing chain tensioner. That'll do it for the install. Do everything here in reverse and you're set.

The TSB says labor is about 2.3 hrs. Unless you're an ace mechanic, plan on spending a couple more hours on this job. If you haven't gotten one already, I would heavily suggest a Haynes Manual. This will help you throughout the installation.

All in all, I heard someone say near 700 bucks from the dealership and 3 something from another garage. This job will run you roughly 130.00 (including any sidebets you may have during the job with your friend about how long it will take you to remove your camshaft sprocket (I lost 5 bucks)) Anyway, if you'd rather throw in the extra 200 somethign bucks to have someone you don't know working on your machine, be my guest. Just thought I would offer an alternative.

Good luck,

-Fox Deacon
