Subject: Kill the cat and run like heck!! IP: Logged
Message: Holy cow! I knew that with my Fastman tb and K&N FIPK II and IAT Adjuster exhausting through a stock system save for the Gibson muffler I was looking at some restriction in the exhaust and could see gains from a little work there, but I had no idea until my 3rd OEM cat started breaking up today and I suddenly was giving it too much gas taking off!
All of a sudden my lag just short of the torque kicking in was gone and it started pulling all the way to redline instead of slacking past four grand. Wow! There's a piece of road I like to stretch its legs on, and before my tb I could get up to 47 mph on it. After the tb I thought finally hitting an even 50 was great. Did all that in February's cold air. Today with the air on I hit 55! Holy crapweasels!
Will I continue to see this nice throughput if I forgo an OEM cat and go with a Carsound high-flow instead? All I know is that if I don't get this grin off my face it might freeze that way! :-)
TIA!

-Eric Injection is nice, but i'd rather be blown. 5.2L, 5speed. Powerdyne SC, 50mm TB, 2bbl M-1, 1.7RR's, MSD 6BTM, ciramic JBA headers, carsound cat, dumped gibson

Message: You probably saw the power gain because the old cat was plugged. A properly working cat doesn't really take away much performance.

Message: Kota, it is indeed a little louder and a little throatier as well. I like it!
Jon, this is my third cat, so so I'll bet that half the truck's life it's had a plugged one. I guess what I'm really wondering is, will a high-flow keep what I have going for me right this second?
I think I'm going to take the plunge; why not? And a Carsound should far outlive the crap cat I'd get under warranty, right?
Heh heh ... maybe if I lose too much back pressure I'll just have to port an intake manifold. Been waiting for a good excuse!

did you lose any torque?

Message: All bets are off now; the cat's clogging and unclogging so sometimes it goes like mad and sometimes it bogs.
I could swear I gained at least as much low-end as high-end, and it did burble, but it did anyway so any difference was too small to be sure of.
However, I'm starting to speculate that even broken this cat isn't flowing as well as a high-flow would. Screw it -- one way to find out!
