Subject: gas fouling of spark plugs?!? IP: Logged
Message: I recently had a dealer tell me my plugs were gas fouled. I assume it is a coating of unburned solids from gasoline that prevent the plug from firing correctly. Is this correct? Is there any way to reliably clean these? The plugs are only three months old.
I performed a tune-up 3 months ago, changing plugs, rotor and cap. Last month I had a service recall performed for the clockspring, and an A/C relay replaced at the dealer. The next day my dak (00 4x4 3.9) was hard to start and ran badly, then well, then badly, back and forth. I thought it was bad gas (filled up on the way home from dealer). Got some injector cleaner and gas sprucer, still bad, starting worse, blue smoke, no power. Then a no start.
Fearing the worst, I had a DIFFERENT dealer look at the dak. Guess what?!! in two months time, my newly changed dist cap was suddenly a different brand and well worn, and had serious white corrosion on coil terminal. The coil wire was also seriously corroded. I replaced the items, but I still have my engine light on and I smell gas ocassionally. Getting about 1-2 MPG less than usual. Dealer says plugs are gas fouled.
I complained to Chrysler that my engine was altered by the dealer and have a call in to the owner of Safford Dodge in Fredericksburg, VA, but no call back yet.
