Message: Feel the heater hoses going into your firewall. They should be hot when the truck is warmed up. If your heater is not heating up then you are not getting hot coolant flowing through it like normal. Maybe there is a restriction, or maybe you put in too big of a Thermostat? Stock is 195.
I have a 98 V6 cc SLT and my heater heats up in about 10 min in the morning.

Message: I too have a 97 Dakota. Assuming the heater hoses indicate that your coolant is up to temp, as Jack has suggested, you may have a blending door (damper) problem in your climate control system. It is positioned via cable using your temperature control knob. I have a similar (but opposite symptons) problem to yours. The air coming out of my vents is always warm, never ambient (AC off, controls set to cold) 95 degree air measured at floor outlet with 75 degree ambient input air. Dealer service would never acknowledge a problem and described it as "normal". Your blending door may be stuck in the opposite position. I would suggest using a thermometer to measure the range of adjustment while running your AC, after you have confirmed that the engine and heater hoses are hot. If similar to mine, I would expect that you would have trouble warming the AC air temp, staying at low temp all the time.
I live in the town where Durangos are built, and have an acquaintance who was a final road test QC inspector at the Chrysler plant. Since the Dak and the Durango are virtually identical from the driver seat forward, he did some "asking" for me and received acknowledgement from Chrysler engineers that there was a problem with the ventilation controls in our model, but Chrysler did not offer a solution (this was in '98). I haven't had the nerve to tear apart my dash to get to the air control box. Good Luck!

Message: I have a similar problem with mine. It doesn't heat up at all. Had the heater core flushed it worked for a day or so. Winter's coming on and it would sure be nice to have a defroster.
Any suggestions?
I don't want to have to replace the heater core but it looks like I might have to. Anyone out there have an exploded view of how to take that thing out?
I am for the most part mechanically inept and could use all the help I can get.
thanks in advance

Message: There has been much discussion regarding this problem in the 97 and in other model years on another thread.
Apparently, flushing the cooling system is causing a blockage in the heater core in some trucks.
Back-flushing the cooling system to remove the gunk from teh heater core seems to be working for a lot of people.
The process is described on this thread:

Message: When I flush a core, I add one additional step. After the initial back flush, fill the core with cooling system flush mixed with hot water and let it work for 10-15 minutes. You can also use a strong solution of vinegar/hot water. (no we're not douching). This will help to clean off the surface of the coils and increase the heat transfer. Finally, flush the system again with water. While you have the hose connected, its also a good time to flush all the gook out of the collant reservoir.

Message: I have a 99 V6 dakota. It doesn't heat up at all. the fan blows but it blows cold only. I had the thermostate changed and the flush but nothing seems to be working. I was told that because the motors are small and due to the design of the truck that they do not put out very muck heat. What is everyone else's heat guage at. Mine is at 80 and from what I understand that is lower than normal. It isn't leaking anti freeze and everything else is working great. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
