Message: Someone told me to drain a quart of motor oil out right before an oil change (about every 50000 miles) and put in a quart of kerosene. It is supposed to flush all the sludge out of the motor. I have done it 3 times now (199,876 miles currently) and wondered if anyone else has heard of this and what if any damage it may cause. My 3.9 is still running strong and using about a quart of oil every 3K - 5K miles. My oil pressure gauge reads higher now (just above half way) than it did when i bougth the truck used at 12,993 miles. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Message: I've heard of it, never done it though. The few people I spoke to it about liked it better (in theory) than those expensive oil flushs.
Dunno if it's any good though. I was a little iffy on it, since a thin film of oil is left on all upper-end parts when you shut down. The Kerosene, I would think, would wash some of that off... Looks like it works for you though!

Message: Its an old school mechanic trick. I wouldn't do it though. Sometimes all that holds old motors together is sludge. A friend of mine did it on an old ford 460. It was so clogged with sludge he had almost no oil pressure. He drained all his oil and refilled with kero and ran it for about 30 mins. All kinds of crap came out when he drained it. He refilled with oil and his pressure came back but a valve tap/or slight rod knock came with it. He has put another 25k on it since and its tapping just the same but still running. This was a very drastic measure to try to squeeze a little more time out of the old big block. I heard that doing it on a regular basis could dry out seals. I also know that you can put a quart in with your gas and it cleans the fuel system. Kero= marval mystery oil

Message: Thanks for the feedback. In light of this I think I'll quit. Probably just stay with regular oil changes until she gives out.

Message: I think the reason it started tapping is because the sludge was keeping everything tight kinda like running straight 50 wieght oil. Remember this was an old ass motor and fords are known for clogged oil returns.

Message: i've heard of it, anf heard of it working... but i was always told that it was too good for the engine. probably since it's not an actual lubricant.

Message: this is useful right before you tear down a motor for rebuild. you could also use tranny fluid. this should not be used as a regular mtc schedule.
