I need some opinions...

I have a 97 3.9L V6 that's been having tranny problems for awhile. Sometimes, when its cold, it won't shift out of first. Then for awhile it would stall repeatedly when shifting into Drive. It would also stall when making a turn from a dead stop, or when the engine idle shifted down while sitting at a light. Now it seems to be hesitate when shifting from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd. Finally, I got the Check Engine light and had to take it in to be checked.

I took it to 2 different shops (AAMCO and a local place). AAMCO said it flared from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd were stacked, and the TCC Engagement and Passing Gear were slipping. Computer codes reported the TCC slippage and a Governor Pressure Switch Malfunction. The local place pulled the pan and found "excessive wear" in the pan. Both places noted the tranny was leaking from the front area and the transaxle gasket.

Admittedly the tranny hadn't been serviced regularly. Both places want to rebuild the tranny. AAMCO estimates $1600 excluding hard parts to rebuild the existing transmission. The local place wants $2500 (total cost - no extras)to install a factory spec rebuild.

It seems that only the Torque Converter is bad... How much should I expect to be paying? Should I go with AAMCO rebuilding the existing tranny to replace the Torque Convertor or with a newly reconditioned transmission from the local place?

The local place warned that AAMCO will nickle and dime me into spending more than the $2500 to put in a whole tranny.

Any recommendations?

I remember getting my old truck's tranny rebuilt for the second time... cost me $500, and that included towing, plus $50 for the shift kit install...

'97 Dodge Dakota Club Cab SLT with a 3.9L V6 4-speed auto trans. IAT in Airbox 180 thermostat, Bosch Platinum plugs (next tune-up it'll be autolites) ripped off that g-dang rubber flap by the radiator and Air Box fender boot, Borg & Warner plug wires (soon to be JBA).

Man those are some high prices, Mine is trippin also, I think it is just my torque converter, I am looking for one and Im going to install it myself, here Is what mine is doing, When I take off, if I take off to fast the truck jumps like it is a standard not going into gear, then it is fine and then sometimes it grinds, when I slowdown and then try to take off fast again, That is why I think it is the torque converter, I might just go to a junk yard and get one. Cant afford 2k, (college student)

I have a 2002 Mopar Performance Catalog right here and it say that an A-500(what's on my 92 3.9) costs $1695, so it's up to you whether you want to spend up to $900 more than a new tranny on a rebuilt one.

well to get my tourque converter replaced was $600 and that was after they tore it apart and replaced the seals cuz it was leaking (the original problem) and found that the TC was F'd up cuz somone tried fixing it themselves (retarded previous owner) and didnt knwow what they were doing and the seals and everything were coated heavily in RTV sealent to keep it from leaking again, but 3 front and rear seals later and a new tourque converter its all good

with all labor and taxes and stuff

I had a bad experience with AAMCO in Richardson,Tx. So, I would advise against going to AAMCO. They probably will nickel and dime you. Call the Better Business Bureau and see what they have to say about AAMCO.

I have 96 3.9L I just had rebuilt twice. The first time the seals burned out. Then now the second rebuilt, has been leaking from the front of the pan. Is it better to use rubber or cork gasket?
