I got tinker-itis this evening, off came the TB and I whipped out the Dremel, I ground the torque step out of my V8 TB . I didn't polish anything yet I just used the finest sanding drums that I could to finish it off for now, just wanted to see if it would make any difference. First impression was good, after stopping at the first intersection I came to it was time to test, I mashed down for the take off and old peg leg lit up like it never has before :) I drove around for about 20 min. and liked what I was feeling it seemed like the low end hesitation was less, it revved quicker.

More testing to come, will probably pull it off next week to polish it out some.

Is your truck Auto or Stick. Did you notice a big difference in power when you added the 1.7 rockers?

Auto

The 1.7 RR's kick in at about 2k rpm and up, they didn't help or hurt the low end other than reduce friction. Mileage is good also 17-19 mixed and 22-23 highway. Truck pulls good when you pull out to pass someone, the 3-4k power band feels real good.

TB Update

Dodge must have really wanted to be "Different" when they patented their "Progressive Bore" TB step

I didn't realize what this was until I was messing with my old V6 TB opening and closing the throttle plates, I could see that the plates had to move about a 1/4" before they got past the step in the TB Bore. This had hesitation written all over it no wonder our trucks feel like they want to fall on their face when you take off.

I put 100+ miles on my truck today and I was really impressed, the acceleration was better every time I took off from a stop.

OK....what exactly is a tb. I understand that it puts more hp and torque on it, which is what i'm looking for. I have a 98 Dakota, ext. cab with 3.9L...so, tell me about it

A TB "Throttle Body" works like a carburetor only it doesn't add the fuel, the Fuel injection takes care of that, the TB just adds the Air to the mixture

Roller rockers must have given you more power. I can't light mine up from a dead stop. I've done the V8 TB(talked to you about that before),K&N filter, IAT & TPS mods, B&W brass cap/rotor,accel coil, Magnaflow muffler. Does the torque step make that much differnce?

What is the Torque step?

If you still have your old V6 TB handy, open the throttle blades wide open, from the top of the TB run your finger down the side of the bore when you get down to the side of the bore just before where the blades close you will feel a bump/lip this is the step. Now that you know where it is, work the throttle open and closed you will see how much the blades have to move before it really starts to open to let air in.

If you don't have a extra TB you could probably feel this with it on the truck just have to take the air hat off.

All I've done for now is grind the step off, I'm debating weather or not to take the horns off when I take it off to smooth the bores up.

I remember a while back when I told everyone on here I ground out my TQ step I got flamed real bad. Seems most of the real tuners (or so they think) think taking the TQ step out is totally wrong for a mildly mod'd V6.
As I stated when I first spoke of it my Dak felt ALOT stronger when I ground the TQ step out and I highly recomend you grind off the air horns, they are big air damns that only make turbulence.
Also get to a hardware store and get the lowest profile bolt the secure the TB as the stock ones are restrictive also.
I think Magnum Muscle sells em also but they are expensive and I cant stand those guys so I am not endorsing them.

Thanks for the tip on the bolts, sorry to hear about the flaming.

I chose to do this after studying all the CNC and factory machined TB's

I'm not going to say it gave more HP but the throttle response is great !

Dan,

i am also gonna recommend that you take that throttle body back off and grind those air horns down.

On my V6 throttle body i ground them off and radiused the bores... a lot, knife edged between the ports and polished everything up pretty good. It made a decent difference.. but like you said.. dont know if it was real hp or just throttle response.

Right now i have bernds old magnum performance sb throttle body. It has HUGE torque steps on it.... i mean they stick out about 2 mm. Besides that it was bored a little, radiused, polised to a mirror finish (never seen such a good job), horns removed, blade edges thinned, throttle shaft ground flat to the blade, smaller screws holding the blades on, and under the tb there are some cuts in the bores that alter the map sensor for a better signal. Now this is also just a V6 throttle body but it was a HUGE diffrence from mine (even modified).

I kinda like the torque steps on this one because it jerks your head back... very torquey throttle body. But one day i imagine i will get one of bernds expensive tb...

Hi ya Greg

Hey it pored down rain all day Sun. so I did pull it off I cut the horns off and smoothed the lip and sides all up. This makes a nice difference in the throttle response, if I had it to do over now I would have got a CNC 48mm TB to start with, but if your handy with a Dremel and don't mind the aluminum dust it's not to hard to do.

Hey I like that floor shifter but isn't that a little rough on the lady frinds! hehehe

If you don't know what a Dremel is you better not be using one on your TB, good way to make a expensive paper weight out of it if you mess up.

But if your determined here's info on a Dremel tool

This looks very interesting.
I think I may do this this week-end.
Are there any things that I should be extra careful with?
I read the link that you posted, and it seems very basic.(http://www.fast4x4.net/tb_port.htm)
My truck is completely stock, and this would definately help, as of right now my truck is such a dog off the line.
