Subject: Throttle hesitation IP: Logged
Message: I have a problem with my 2000 3.9L, and I was wondering if anyone knows the cure. When I try to leave a light hard, my truck will hesitate severely. Anything over half throttle applied quickly will cause the engine to lug, and I get a pop from the intake (almost sounds like a backfire). I have a Gibson Cat back, JBA headers, Flometrics throttle body, and a home-brew cold air intake installed. I just cleaned the throttle body, and I put new cap and rotor and 3923 plugs in, no change. This just started to happen about 5000 miles ago, and nothing was changed on the truck for at least 10,000 miles before that. Otherwise the truck runs fine, just seems to load up when you try to take off hard. No computer codes either. Any ideas what I can look for?

Message: Have you tried checking your fuel filter? That can sometimes cause hesitation in throttle response. It could be a little clogged.

Message: Lattimer: Have the dealer check the fuel-sync, MAP, and TPS. (Also, are all the plug wires on correctly and tight.)
BlackDak: There is no (conventional) fuel filter on out trucks. It's a simple screen in the fuel tank. But definitely worth checking as well.

Message: Bernd,
I gave up on the dealer a while ago. Tried three local dealers, they all scratch their heads and say "Well, there aren't any codes, so we don't know." All plug wires are on and tight.
I know what MAP and TPS are, but what is fuel-sync? Is this part of the computer program?
Could it be a bad sensor? Is there a way to check them myself?

Message: Just a question about the fuel filter. Doesn't the tank have to come down to get to the fuel filter? Seems like a lot of work just for a fuel filter. Been wondering about this since I have 68,ooo miles on my Dak and I haven't cleaned it yet. Thanks, Greg

Message: I have also seen this problem with my 2001 Dakota. I went back to the dealer about it and they took me out in another dakota which had the same problem.. Their mechaninc suggested I might get more power off the line by doing a brake stand. I've also had a problem where the truck stalls or comes close to stalling shifting into gear or from reverse to drive. Anyone found a solution to this yet?

Message: I have read that there is no fuel filter and that there is one which is together with the sensor and furl pump. I'm in Panama and it's not easy to get information on my 98 dakota down here!
