Subject: Help Me!!!!!! IP: Logged
Message: I know nothing about trucks, I just want to make mine look, sound and run nice. Does adding performance exhaust, such as Flowmaster, decrease gas mileage? How about headers? Can someone let me know what performance parts decrease or increase gas mileage? You can post it here or email it to ChreeJr@prodigy.net . Thanks for the help.

Message: most performance parts will slightly increase gas mileage. this is because they allow more airflow into the engine. headers and flowmaster muffler will both provide a little better gas mileage

Message: Thanks. I was always told differently, that performance parts would waste more gas. I guess that may have just been my parents and uncles not wanting me to spend my money on performance parts.

Message: Provided you keep your foot out of it, and not show off your power, it will stay same or increase. The engine doesn't have to work as much to get/keep you moving. Yes muffler, and a cold air intake should be the place to start. Headers arn't that bad to start with either.

Message: Actually more air into the engine means that more fuel has to be injected to resulting in a decrease in gas milage. Think about it, a 500hp engine has to use more gas than a 200hp engine, that horsepower doesn't come from no where. The theory is that if you have more power you won't need to depress the gas pedal as much to take off. Of course if you have more power you are more likely to drive the truck like a racecar which definitely decreases milage.
Some parts that reduce friction, like roller rockers, and synthetic oils will reduce friction and add power. But if your installing computer chips, cams, throttle bodies, changing gears, forced induction, etc your losing gas mailage. It's not a big loss but it's there. I don't worry about milage it maybe costs me and extra $1.50 a week in gas with my mods. My dak gets around 15mpg, which is a lot better than my big lifted 4x4 which gets about 8mpg and needs $800 worth of tires every 20,000 miles.

Message:
that 500 hp motor didnt make 500hp on little mods like intake, muffler, throttle body. It made it from the .040 over bore, the .550 lift camshaft with 300 degrees of duration. from the 52mm throttle body with 30lb injectors, from the 200gph fuel pump and such.
A mod like a bigger throttle body (such as a v8 tb on a v6) wont add more fuel until you pound on it. The only time a bigger throttle body will be capable of flowing more air than a smaller throttle body is at WOT. At idle the two throttle bodies will be flowing the same amount of air and at cruising speeds the bigger throttle body wont have to open up as much and allows for better flowing air. Any mod like a throttle body or muffler, the computer will be able to adjust to. Now if you add bigger fuel injectors into the equation than you will probably see worse fuel mileage... like i did when i put in the 24lb injectors. And items like a jet module will help mpgs.... no they dont add more fuel... they just change the fuel curve and timing curve for better power and mileage. Now you are probably thinking that Chrylser already should of set those for optimum power and mpgs but no they didnt. Honda's are made for the best mileage and power right out of the plant. Ever wonder why a muffler adds basically no power to one of those... or an intake, or a chip. I also own a honda del sol and i added a muffler and intake and saw no gain in anything other than noise.
now the problem with mpg increasing mods is the power increase.... for some reason when you increase your mpgs, your performance increase a little and what better way to show off that shiney new muffler than to rev that motor up... or to drag race... or just to be a little heavy on the throttle... thats where the mpgs go.
i personally have done several mods to my truck and i have recorded the gas mileage all the way through. When i first got my truck i was getting like 14 (city) mpgs... the best i got was on the highway with all my mods and a tonno cover, 26 (21 city)mpgs. Without the tonno cover i got 23mpgs on the highway (20 city). But on my most recent highway traveling i only got 20 (18 city) mpgs... because of the 24lb fuel injectors.
take notice that the tonno cover really only helps mpgs on the highway and not so much for the city. Just to let you guys know who are interested in one.
now we can probably argue all day about this but most people want to see conclusive evidence to go by. If you dont believe me.... fine... you keep getting that crappy mileage and i will fill my truck less often (except for you bastards with those 25 gallon tanks)...

Message: With all the mods I've done so far, I've increased my mileage. I do 95% city driving and I'm getting 17.3 mpg. That's 2.3 mpg better than it was getting stock. I suspect it'd be slightly more if I wouldn't get frustrated with the traffic and hammer the go-pedal as much as I do.

Message: right on intense, Jon showed how he knows nothing as it applies to street applications, an engine is an air pump eisier in- easier out means more powergets to the wheels and better milage as the engine works less to breath. only a true lead foot will see a decrease in milage. Heck way back in '74 I took a "73 Dode Charger witha 318 rated at an enemic 140 hp, turned it into a 375 hp street racer and as an added bonus watched my milage as I traveled from the suburbs in Ohio to the wilds of upper Michigan go from 18 mpg stock to 22 + mpg after all the mods. Any of you going to the Detroit Dream cruise watch for me, It is an SE with creame factory paint and a special glow in the dark factory stripe along both sides.
The stripe looks dark brown but glows from dull red to brite yellow as headlites reflect off of it.

Message: Um i dont know what you are talking about more air flow means lower engine temps. i have a 97 dak 3.9L with a TB spacer, jet chip stage1, high flow cat and turbo exaust, and an air raid Cold air intake, and i get ALOT better mpg
stock i was gettin around 18 19 and now i am gettin around 23 24 and still with alot of power so you dont have to sacrafice power for mpg you just got to know wat to put on ur truck.
