Subject: Newbie Pickup Truck Owner with Dak ?'s IP: Logged
Message: I picked up my first pickup truck about 3 weeks ago...a 2002 Dakota Sport Club Cab V6 3.9 2WD in Metallic Silver. I've been driving a 1992 Honda Accord for the past 10 years. So, I'm new when it comes to truck experience.
Anyway, I just have a couple of questions about certain things I've noticed about my truck. If anyone could give me some advice as to what these things might be, that would be great. I'm totally a new comer to the truck world.
OK, here goes:
1.) I hear a whistling when I accelerate. It seems to be connected to the gas pedal. When I accelerate the whistling gets faster; when I slow down or take my foot off the gas it goes away. Is this normal or is there something I need to get checked out?
2.) My actual break pedal squeeks. Sometimes, not everytime I break, but sometimes when I hit the break the physical pedal makes this squeeking/creeking noise. What can that be?
3.) The acceleration....when I'm getting on the highway and I hit that gas, initially the truck doesn't move at first. It takes a bit to start moving but once I'm there the truck is flying. Maybe I'm too used to driving the small honda for the past 10 yrs and this is my first truck; but you'd think, with a bigger engine and more HP, the thing would move right away. Maybe that's where a V8 on a 4x4 will compensate but I was hoping for some more initial power. Any ideas or suggestions?
Sorry for all the questions but I'm new to this whole truck thing. I love this truck and I just want to make sure everything ok with it. If not, then now's the time to take it back to the dealer to get checked out while it's still under warranty.

Message: 1) Not necessarily normal but a lot of people on here have the same problem, if you look through some of the posts you will find more info on it.
2) That's pretty normal, you might try lubing the linkage under there, but there's also air thats forced out near the booster when you hit the brake and that can cause noise which is normal.
3) Normal, In fact newer cars do the same thing. It used to be thatwhen you hit the gas a steel cable would cause the tranny to downshift and you would take off. Now the computer has to think about what your doing, the downshift the transmission before it tells the engine that it's ok to take off. I work at a new car dealership and i've noticed that on all new cars there is like a 1.5 second lag between when you put your foot down, and when you start to really take off.

Message: 1. Alot of people with the newer models have this problem.
2. Mine had that (97) and it has went away after about 1.5 years of driving. I never attempted to oil it.
3. Hum, I have noticed that sometimes on mine. If I want it to really go "NOW" I click the OD button off, or floor it.
Congrats on the new truck!!! Stick around or come back if you plan on changing things.

Message: Thanks guys!!! I just wanted to know that everything is ok with my new Dak. I love it. And trust me, I'll definitely stick around because I have plans for the truck....lifting, more power, etc. The only thing is that it is a lease so I can't do any drastic mods now. Unless I plan to keep it which looks pretty good.
Anyway, anyone one have any suggestions on an affordable, not too drastic mod/adjustment that I can do to the truck to get more power and maybe some better gas mileage?
Thanks!!!

Message: For right now, just drive it, get use to it. Then swap to brass dist cap n rotor, large plug wires, autolite 3923 plugs. I dunno your term in "drastic" but look into a cold air intake, and a muffler. Their are some other things, but they are more drastic then that, will require swaping some halfway major parts out.
