Subject: Exhaust ? for Bernd IP: Logged
Message: I have a 01 4x4 3.9L auto. I want a cat-back system with a low tone and some power advantage. I don't want anything loud (I am 40 and outgrown louder is better) but a tone like an RT. Will be running K&N Intake kit and IAT adjuster. Any help would be appreciated.

Message: Keep the factory exhaust system and replace the restrictive factory muffler with a Dynomax Super Turbo. This way, you retain the factory configuration and the sound is quieter (but still agressive sounding) than a Flowmaster.
It's going to be hard to keep the actual tone low as the V6's (being an odd-fire configuration) will make a higher pitch sound out of the tailpipe than comparable V6's that aren't odd-fire. Just the nature of the beast.
Also, the reason I stated to keep the factory exhaust system is this: Since you have a 4x4, you really don't want to swap over to a 3" single or 2"-2.25" dual system. Those systems are really meant for mid-top end performance. A 4x4 needs the power to stay down low on the TQ curve...not the upper HP curve.

Message: Hey there,
I'm new to the tuning phenomenon. I am considering a new muffler for my '02 quad cab 4x4 v6. I had the v6 in my '96 club cab but the quad is a *bit* heavier and dogs a bit in starting situations... Does a muffler like the Dynomax Super Turbo add horsepower? If it's anything like the difference I noticed when I added a K&N filter, it would be worth it to me... I'd like to get the HP up to around 200. Is this possible? There are times that the truck can't generate enough power to get out of its own way, and times it pulls like crazy. Don't like tons of noise to wake the neighbors so the Dynomax sounds like an okay upgrade if it adds performance too...
thanks in advance,
jim (macman37)

MacMan: The Dynomax mufflers are an inexpensive, performance replacement for the factory (restrictive) muffler. HP gains vary from vehicle to vehicle but you can gain some better mid to top-end performance. If you're going to switch to a free flowing exhaust system, definitely install a cold-air intake system to reduce the restriction on the intake side. (Better engine breathing produces better performance.)

Message: if you get a straight through pipe it will produce the higher pitched sounds... but it will be loud. If you go with a chambered muffler it will be loud and have a good sound to it.... just whatever you do keep a tailpipe so that it doesnt kill you in the cab
