Subject: AirAid or K&N? IP: Logged
Message: I have a problem. I'm going to put a new intake on my
truck but I'm not sure of the advantages, disadvantages
between the AirAid and the K&N. The AirAid looks nice
with the powder coated metal and would seem to perform
the same as a K&N. On the other hand, K&N seems to be
the standard when it comes to intakes, although it costs
more. And does air temp on the intake really make a
difference? I imagine the plastic K&N over the metal tube
AirAid would play a factor in this.
Any help would be awesome.
By the way, this site just rules!

Message: heres what i think, they are all pretty much the same. i got an intense performance intake ( www.speedtweaks.net or www.intenseperformance.com ) and it works great, they have alot of choices to fit what you want and they dont cost nearly as much as the K&N.

Message: It depends too on your engine. K&N is the best way to go, except that they don't have a direct to throttle for the 4.7 yet, all the others do. If you have a 5.9, 5.2 or 3.9, most of them, make use of the stock TB hat, which disrupts the velocity. Air Raid uses the TB hat and that accordian stock tube. K&N is one solid streamlined piece.

Message: i'd choose intense also, it'll use the K&N style filter which everyone wants
which will get you the power you're looking for

Message: One more thing. K&N uses certified CARB #'s on their
products to pass smog. If I use the K&N intake for the V8
(which I've heard I can use on my 3.9 V6) will the CARB #
still be valid even though it's on a '6? It's no big deal to
take it off and put the stock back on when smog check
does come around, but still it would be nice to bypass the
hassle!
Any answers?
Thanks.

Message: Andy,
Technically, no...it's not going to be "Emissions Legal". But, leave the sticker under the hood and most techs won't even question it. if they do, put your old airbox back on, have it tested, and put the K&N back on afterwards.

Message: What about "emissions legal" for the Powerdyne or Vortech? What do thing the chances are that the carb plate will work for the v6? Removing a supercharger is a little more work than an intake. At the track; most folks did not notice my truck was a v6. I usually had to point it out to them; most expected it to be an 8. I realize smog certifiers might be more observant, but do they look in a book to find if a sc is legal for different size engines? I'm in Cali, so might be able to answer this.

Message: I installed the K&N this weekend and would highly recommend it. I understand its more expensive $230 (KRC Performance) vs $150 - $200 (Airaid, Intense performance,....) The K&N replaces the airhat which is very important and it comes with a heat shield which helps a little. Some people build their own heat shields but for a little extra money I didn't have to go through that hassle and I got the airhat. When it comes time for CARB inspection, well I'm covered there too. I'd pay the extra, its worth it!!!!

Message: The powerdyne is not CARB approved at all. The Vortech systems are (CARB EO # D-213-17)..for the V8's only.

Message: Well it would seem that the K&N has a slight edge. But I'm
still not sure. There's seems to be an argument for either
system. Maybe we'll just flip a coin?
Thanks for all the insight by the way
