Message: Neil,
Do you also have the plastic pipe running from the TB to the front of the grill?
Will building another pipe really flow better? I have heard that it does help.

I don't know if you'll see that much of a gain on your Dakota's considering the airfilter style you currently have. On '97+ Dakota's the stock airbox is very restrictive because of all the bends and "dead spaces".
Something you could try with your stock airfilter is to run some tubing (I'm not sure of the inlet diameter on your filter) from the air filter to someplace where fresh air is coming in (beside the radiator or passenger fender). You should see a little gain with this mod.
If you want to make something up like Gen3 Dakota's have, you'll need an airhat from a Gen3 Dakota. And yes it will fit on your TB/carb.

Message: I have a 98 V6....What I did was go to Home Depot, bought a 3' length of aluminum 3" (i think) round air duct/hot water heater vent pipe, cut it to size, and hose clamped it to my existing air hat. That is after I took out all the old crap. Just attached it to the end of the bendable hose coming out of the air hat. Then I just attached a APC air filter on the end of the aluminum pipe, and that was it. I am going to paint the aluminum pipe to make it look a litlle better. Performs great since I put it on.

Message: Do you think if i were to just get an open filter, like the one in intense99daks picture, it would perform better than what i have know?

Message: No, Intense changed his already. The open element like the one in the picture draws in only hot air from the engine. Try the idea with the pipe.

Actually I went from the stock air box to an open air filter (with IAT sensor in stock location) to a cool air intake back to an open air filer with IAT sensor relocated.
With the IAT sensor relocated (to beside the radiator) the open air filter gives just as much performance as the custom tube I had and it still runs great in the heat. I don't have any of the power loss that I experienced before moving the IAT sensor.
You can run an open air filter, but I highly recommend relocating your IAT sensor.

Message: The IAT sensor is on the passenger side of the intake manifold. It is a fairly large (brass?) piece that screws in. It has two wires coming to it.

Message:
You should relocate it anywhere where it's getting fresh air. For example on a Gen3 a good choise would be either the passenger side fender or in the opening beside the radiator (like I did).

Message: Hey man...check the date on the posts before you reply. It's a real annoyance reading through posts over 3 years old and not realizing it.
To reset the PCM, disconnect your neg. battery terminal and turn the key to the start position and hold for around 30 seconds. Then reconnect the battery cable, start it and don't touch the gas (mine usually will almost die the first time and just barely catch), shut it off after about a minute or so, repeat, then start it once more and you can rev it up or drive it or whatever. That just allows the computer to properly learn the idle and stuff.
