Subject: W/pump shaft nut IP: Logged
Message: Trying to change water pump on 94 3.9 w/ac but can't get the nut off the pump shaft. It's been a bad day when I can't get something off an engine! Am I missing something? Every thing I've read says this is an easy replace of a water pump.
Thanks.

Message: I know on the 97's you have to borrow a tool from the parts store, put up a $50 deposit and get the tool for a few days

If I remember correctly you need to back off a couple bolts on the water pump pulley so you can wedge a large screwdriver or crowbar in there. The purpose of this is to hold the pulley so it doesn't rotate when you try loosening the large 34mm nut.
The 34mm fan nut has regular threads so turn it counter clockwise. If you don't have a large enough wrench a large crescent wrench will do. You might need an extension on it to get more leverage and/or make it past the fan blades.
Hope this helps.

Message: Thanks for the info. Have been using a 1-7/16" wrench fits OK. Tried the screw driver wedged between to partial backed out bolts but keeps slipping because of the excessive force trying to turn the wrench CCW. I have soaked it in 'Blaster' to hopefully pentrate it for loosing. Somehow it seems on with too much torque. Was Chrysler getting ready to strike in Feb of 94... LOL Anyway I'll check the tool rentals for the 'thing-a-ma-jig' to hold the pulley. To give you a sample of how much leverage I have on the wrench, I am using a 6 foot steel chain link post. Still could not budge CCW before the wedged screwdriver gives away. Thanks.

Did you try hitting the wrench/pipe with a big hammer? A lot of times a sudden blow like that will loosen things up that leverage won't budge.
