Subject: Engine Mount Q
IP: Logged

Message:
I keep breaking engine mounts. I have a 93 Dakota extended cab, 3.9, 3.55 rear, 5 speed. I rarely load the truck up or run it hard at all....it has 198721 miles on it and I swear I'm keeping this truck forever! Note: this truck has been wrecked and rebuilt- the frame is bent and there is alot of body work on it. I'm not sure if the frame being bent has anything to do with it or not. Tires seem to wear fine, so not sure if there is an alignment problem with the rear or not?? Any help appreciated.

Either your buying cheap mounts or is has to do with the frame. If the tranny is crooked, or the engine is crooked and the tranny is straight it will put a lot of stress on the mounts. If you ant to keep the truck i would have someone make some measurements and find out where the problem is. If you don't want to straighten the frame you might beable to weld the mounts in slightly different to keep the drivetrain lined up.

BTW if the tranny or rear axle is crooked you also have a chance of cracking the tranny case.

Some advice.
1) Make sure rear end is absolutly level at rest so yoke points horizontial with level ground, yoke not pointing to sky.
2) Tranny should also be absolutly level with level ground.
3) Engine .. ditto going by the crank.. level with level ground. (engine front may look up but it is the crank centerline that matters.
4) If all is in order as far as level.. use solid steel mounts, not the ones with rubber. Everyone says they transfer too much vibration but I do not find that to be true.
5) Good Luck !
