Message: ok this is whats going on. a few months ago i went down this very very easy 4x4 trail. the next day my dak started getting this little thud in the steering wheel, not to bad at first but got worse and worse as time went on. in june the truck was almost undriveable so i took it to a dealer and they said the steering shaft needed to be replaced. after my deductable ($100) the truck was as good as new. last week another very easy trail, in fact there was a 2 wheel drive s10 out where i was going, i get back on the road and the same thud is there again. am i not supposed to take my 4x4 off of pavement? this is rediculouis. i took it back to my dealer and they said they would repplace it for free but thats not the point. is 3 steering shaft and 48,000 miles normal. sorry for the long post, just pissed.

Message: Hello there Muddy Dak.
I have replaced this shaft on my 98 2 WD. My question to Dodge is why such a puny u-joint on a
part that can cost your life!
I've had no trouble since, but that thud finally drove me to my buddies garage for a repair!
Good luck - I'm at 25,000 miles with my Dak.
Still love it like it was new.

Message: i'm pretty sure theres a company called borgensun or something like that that makes a higher quality steering shaft. i think i'll look into that before i get my replaced. i'd rather pay a few bucks that risk my life by not being able to turn.

Message: I hear you on that! Please excuse the typo - my 98 is at 125,000 miles. I replaced this shaft around 80,000. No sign of renewed trouble.
