Subject: Anitfreeze Leak....HELP!!! IP: Logged
Message: Ok, so i'm driving, (pretty hard and it was about 90 some degrees out). Then i get a STRONG smell of antifreeze. I pull into my freinds parking lot, and the antifreeze is dripping down the firewall (passanger side, looks like from under the silver metal plate) its dripping onto the y pipe then onto the ground, it let out quite a puddle. I checked the level and it was a bit low, i drove it to my house (not far) and there was only one little drop.
I tracked down the leak to a hose, poping through the fire wall, directly behind and down a bit from the passanger valve cover. Antifreeze was sitting in it. I cleaned it out, and drove it around, nothing. I tried turning on heater, A/C, vents all that......nothing.
Drove it to work today...thought i smelled it but it was probebly my imagination (no dripping).
So the question is, is that a bleed off valve from the heater core??? The pipe was dirty as the rest of the fire wall so it looks like nothing was attached.
Sorry for the bad grammer, spelling, and long post...its monday...
Please respond as fast as you can...thanks!!!

Message: Sam, if that was the inlet or return, then why would it not spray tons of coolant over the engine bay when the heater was on?

Message: I had a leak down the firewall on my new 2001
Dakota V6, driver's side. Every time it rained, a
puddle on the floor, driver's side. The dealer
took out the front windshield and resealed it. No more leak. Maybe you're smelling windshield fluid? Maybe not if you can see the hose clearly.
Sometimes leaks are tricky to isolate.

Message: My friend just had the exact same problem. He has a 2000 V6. Could someone explain this a little more for me. Jiffy Lube didn't have a clue about what happened, and I'd like to know in case it ever happens to mine.
Thanks

Message: probably because with the heat on or off that hose is always under pressure and heat when the engine is up to operating temp.
chances are you might not have gotten it hot enough during your test and it might just be a small leak that likes to clogg and unclog itself [shrug] really can't tell you for sure other than having the heater on wouldn't really matter.
But replace that hose and you should be fine.

Message: Looked in a Hanes service manual. Doesn't say anything about a hose. My friend talked to the dealer and they said he'd probably have to replace the heater core. Is it as simple as replacing a hose? Also, I've heard that it is really tough to fix these things. Is it worth trying to do it ourselves, or should he get the dealer to do it?
Any info is greatly appreciated.

Message: That little hose coming through the firewall is actually a drain for the heater/ac case...more for the ac. When you run the ac, condensation forms and unless it has somewhere to go it will mildew inside the heater/ac case and produce a really foul smell inside of the cab. Well when your heater core starts to leak you will notice coolant coming from this drain and posibly your passenger side floor may also become soaked with coolant. Have this heater core replaced before you cause some real problems by running the engine low on coolant

Message: Cool. Thanks for the info. I was confused when the inlet/outlet hose was mentioned. My friend wants us to fix it, but after I read about discharging and recharging the refrigerant, SCREW THAT !!!
Dude, that definately sucks. Did you fix it to where you can still run 11 psi, or did you just switch to a different pulley ??

Message: I have a similar problem with mine
Whenever I check my antifreeze (about once a month), I am always low, very low. But I never see any leaks and it doesn't affect my temperature in anyway. I just wonder, where does it all go? Its like it drinks antifreeze.

Message: @daddio... yeah, wonder what that was about?? thermoman sounds like he has plenty of money to just pay for services. great for him that he can take his truck, if he has one, to a shop. this site i thought was to try and get some help from others who possibly, may, might be a mechanic or with similar problem. if you don't get it then don't be on the site. we aren't asking you personally for help; only those who respond with genuine assistance. thanks anyway for your help thermoman
