I have an 87 Dakota 4X4 with the 3.9L pre mag. It was rebuilt at 125,000, odometer reset, and it now has 224,000+ miles on it. I had an offer to buy another 3.9L out of a 90-92 dakota. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that a fuel injected model?? If yes, is it worth my troubles of switching it over? I can get the engine for about $300. What all will that conversion require, and is it worth my time or money. Any ideas would be a great help.

As long as the engine comes with the wiring harness and the brain you have everything you need, other that maybe installing the o2 sensors in the exhaust. It might take some work to get everything working so it looks like a clean installation, getting all the gauges working and stuff, but it should be no big deal to get the engine in and running. Or you could just put the intake off your old engine on it and run the new engine with a carb.

Kryp2nite, I am not sure as to whether or not i will sell the old 3.9. Are you looking? It is still a strong running engine! I will let you know how I decide. Thanks for the intrest!

Hey congrats, I'm doing the same thing, and I think it is definately worth the effort (especially when the effort is only $300) like the guy up above said, you have everything you need, just get the wiring harness and the PCM. Everything else should just bolt right up. I'm not too sure about the gages cuz I'm not that far along in my build up. I'm actually trying to convert my existing premagnum into a magnum. If that doesn't work, than I'm going the route that you are and I'm buying a used magnum, and rebuilding that. Good luck and hopefully you will have a lot more fun with the magnum.

Sounds like a project you got going! I am pretty sure that it is a 91-92 engine, supposedly they are about the best 2 years for that engine. $300 for a freshly rebuilt engine, at only 60 miles or so on it, is a steal in my eyes. As long as the persons who did the rebuild were half way respectable, then it should really go over just fine.
