Message: Done it twice. Only 2 bolts. One is a bear to get to (on the top), but jacking up the frontend and working from under the vehicle it takes about an hour. It is a bit tricky to position the new starter but that is the way it is to be done.

Message: A real bitch at first until I thought about it for a while...as in half done the hard way...finally realized if you remove the drivers side wheel and tire then the rubber section of the inner fender....just pop out the plastic anchors..similar to door panels....remove the wires, after disconnecting the battery of course....use a LONG extension with a wobble socket and a rachet to remove the 2 bolts...air rachets work the best due to limited space. The starter will slide between the steering shaft and the frame, out the whole in the inner fender. Just reverse the process to install the new one.

Message: I just replaced mine. I did not pull any steering, exhaust or brakeline hardware though they are all in the way. I used a box end on the breaking free part for both bolts on my 1996, 3.9 V6. It was a tight fit. Took me 4 hours to get the top bolt to break free tapping with a hammer on the wrench as a last resort. Once the top bolt was loose, I used a univerally bendable 3/8 inch ratchet fitting and my 5/8 standard socket to get the bolt out. I broke the connecting isulation on the hot wire for the starter and the solenoid wire, but I just wrapped the starter wire. Last, I used a grabber tool and my bendy wrist to put the wires on with the starter resting on the metal toward the front of the truck near the mount. Used a bungy to hold the starter in place stringing it from the starter to the hood. Once the wires were on I pushed it forward, released the bungy and bolted it on. 2 nights, 6 hours, 85 bucks. Maybe paying a mechanic is easier.

Message: 1998 Dakota 3.9. I have all the bolts and wiring lose, but the starter is like it's welded on there. I've tried pounding on it,chisels, levers, but it won't budge. Any suggestions on how to get it off?

Message: Santa Claus had the best advice. Jacking up
driver side and removing the wheel and plastic
wheel well liner is the key to this whole repair.
Start to finish, 90 min with 30 min needed to
start the threads on the upper mounting bolt.
