Subject: loud tire hum, bearings?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have this loud hum coming from my front
passenger side tire well. It sounds
like I have big swampers but only have 255
streets. What could this be?

now you know thats..................

Could be bearings, but first try running your hand across the tire. Is it smooth or is it all choppy and cupped? You could also rotate the tires to verify that it is a tire problem.

I got mine done last week, front passenger side. It's expensive. Good old Chrysler, the bearings are sealed and you have to buy a whole new hub. Up here, the part was $229.

I think i smell a scam artist or crappy service.
I hate takin my dak here but its the only place that i dont have to pay for work(dad puts it on business account).

And i know its the one making noise that they "so-called" fixed.

Its getting to the point that its giving me a headach its so loud. Its louder then my glasspack exaust!

Could it be anything else? Is there a certain way these things have to be put on?

Well don't think about it for too long, sic. Someone I once knew had a '95 Tracker with that nice bad bearing hum -- and it sent her into the median eventually when they quit waiting for her to get off her butt and replace them and locked up the front wheel. That was, admittedly, after at least six months. And a good sized pebble would send a Geo Tracker into the weeds anyway... :-)

To see if there is play in it: Jack the truck up in the air so that the tire is off the ground and grab the tire and see if you can wiggle it. If it's bad enough to make noise it probably is loose, and if it's really loose you want to get it fixed right away before the wheel falls off altogether.

BTW you can check all your suspension parts like this, wiggle the tires and see if anything moves that shouldn't.

loud hum like big mudders when I hit 55 mph. It was the passenger side front wheel bearing. I bought the truck used and the dealer had over torqued the nylock nut to compensate for the crappy bearing. After about a month of driving, the wheel was almost bald (brand new tires). I jacked up the front end and the wheel flopped up and down on the spindle. I bought the new bearing set and installed it. The old one someone had tried to fix, but since it is a sealed unit, it is not fixable and this is what happened.
Now, it drives like a dream, no noise at any speed.

this is an old post, but if you have issues with yor bearings in the future. Firs take the hub assembly off the truck. Now look for the bearing part numbers that are etched usually along the arc of the bearing. Next call you local Napa, Advance etc, with the bearing number. Have them cross ref. it in their BOOKS not computers. I think I spent around 30 bucks a side for these bearing. Anyways, once you have the new bearings, bring the hub into a shop that has a press or a NAPA, and have them press out and in. Usually they will charge 5 to 10 bucks a hub.
