Subject: 89 Dakota engine problem

Hello,
I do not do message forums very often so please bear with me. I have an 89 Dakota, 3.9L, automatic with fuel injection. Driving home from work yesterday it started to run rough. As I would slow for traffic or a light, it would begin to vibrate a little and as I stopped, the engine would either die or drop so low in revs that it felt like the engine was stumbling. Did this the more I drove it. I have checked the following: alternator, fuel pump(I can hear the pump work as I turn it over), changed the fuel filter, ditributor cap and rotor and I have changed the plugs recently. Any help, advice or suggestions would be appreciated. The truck has 42000 miles on it. My dad gave it to me last summer, and he was the original owner so I know the mileage is correct. I love the truck and I need to fix it without spending a small fortune taking it to a dealer if I can help it.

I have the exact same truck. The same thing has happened to me twice. Both times I traced it back to a bad tank of fuel that clogged one or both of my injectors. The first time I took it to the dealer (big mistake). The quoted me $943 in repairs, with the small print that said "..this may or may not fix the problem". Screw that!

I took it down the road to an independent shop, and he changed my fuel filter and cleaned out my injectors using a fuel injector machine. Total cost was $125. Done deal.

So see if you can think of where and when you got your last tank of gas. Also, you might perform a self diagnostic check using the CHECK ENGINE light. Go here and follow the instructions:

first, get a 20 lbs sledge hammer, then

oh wait, we arent fixing fords.....

run some Sea Foam through your truck, it worked wonders for mine, and honestly raised my mpg up to 16s from upper 14s to lower 15s

so i imagine it cleaned it out a little

Just wanted to say thanks to those that replied to the 89 Dakota problem of stalling, etc. The problem was the EGR valve pressure transducer. It is (obviously) part of the EGR system and it is replaced as part of the EGR valve. The EGR valve has a diaphram and the back pressure transducer has one as well. The system is checked by applying vacuum at the fitting in front of the transducer. If the system is working properly, it will hold vacuum for at least 30 seconds. If it not working (not holding vacuum), it is an indication that one of the two diaphrams are leaking air and not working properly. I recommend buying a Haynes or Clymer manual. That helps with the troubleshooting. I have a Haynes one now and it describes the problem and the troubleshooting procedure pretty well.
Thanks again to all who replied, this site rocks. AJ

We have a normally reliable dodge dakota that one day out of the blue just shut down while my husband was driving to work. It started again a coulple of days later and ran long enough we could get it close to home. ( had to be pushed part way) every since we have not been able to get it started. after checking we know its getting fuel and has spark. need to know where to go now.

i had the same problem with my truck randomly dieing. Will the truck start when its parked or will not start period now. For my truck it ended up that the sending unit for the fuel takes outlets were rotted. SO at a stand still it would get fuel but if u hit any bumps it would suck air in the lines and cause it to die out on me. I just cut the metal down to where it was good and ever since its ran perfect.

First step is to never go back to that dealer again.

Second, check fault codes:

http://www.allpar.com/fix/codes/index.html

Check all vacuum hoses for cracks and leaks. Let us know what you find.

It's also possible that the EGR valve is stuck open.

Im Having a similar problem with my 89 Dodge Dakota 3.9l at first i did a tune up and it was okay then it started going into overdrive while i was driving ( the button is on my dashboard) and would sputter a little and hesitate getting up to speeds ( it does go up in speeds just alot of hesitation) so i Checked the codes and the only thing that popped up was a bad Throttle Position Sensor so i changed that now it is running a little better but i made it have a vaccum leak by taking the PCV valve off and it ran alot better for one day now its back to going into overdrive and hesitating while im driving. Im out of answers not sure if its the EGR? or what? I have had it into many mechanics that all say the same thind they can't find anything. I work at a transmission shop and its not my transmission I took it to my mechanic and he at first said it was the computer going bad. But i had that checked its fine. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT!!!
