Message: Man, after all the performace mods I have done, I finally gotta test them on the way home. I got behind a dodge ram that sounded like it had a v6 5sp with duals on it (not as deep as my friends with a v8). He started snorting at me, so the next light, I got up next to him, reved it, he reved his, I droped mine into 2nd (auto) and the light changed, we took off, no tire spinning, he got my a$$ of the line, I was like WTF?? hit 45, I popped it into drive and all be damn I'm gaining on him. Got next to him about 60 and then we had to shut it down cause of the next light. I was pissed. Then next light (after that one) I had to turn :( So then I stop at post office and I smell burt rubber smell, I never spun my tires, so whats my smell? and what all do I need to get some off the line power?? I have CAI, located IAT, ford injectors, power crank, tb spacer (ha), 3923 plugs, brass cap n rotor, 7.5 or 8 mm wires, 180 stat, flowmaster with duals. The only other planed engine crap was a v8tb. Argh. Sorry for the book, had to vent.

3.90 or 4.10 gears will help your take off from dead stop if your v6 has 3.55 which most do

Message: You asked:
"what all do I need to get some off the line power??"
Don't do this:
", I droped mine into 2nd (auto) and the light changed, we took off,"
You may want to try 1st gear!

Message: Make a V6 go faster? Loose the power-robbing Auto. Other than that? The gears would help probally. The V8 TB might help, but mostly at higher Revs.

Message: Thanks for the replys, Changing gears is a no, I drive interstate to much, Going to stick no, My wife drives this, TB I am hoping, and the dual flows, I do wanna change, its to damn loud. For pipe size, I have no clue, but your in the right range. Think dropping it into first would have helped?? Then just shift it back up a little faster?? And what would my rubber smell have been??

Message: I do remember reading that changing gears manually on the auto will actually slow you down on the 1-2 shift (low gear band stays engaged too long), but since you had it in 2nd at the line, it shouldn't be an issue. Did you just mat it at the light? If you power brake a little instead of just hitting it, you will launch a lot faster. I take mine up to about 1500 RPMS, then let off the break while mashing the pedal. Leaps up very nicely with no spin. I also just leave it in drive (OD off). There doesn't seem to be any real advantage to manually shifting the auto in a drag race.
Also, a different TB with your setup would help greatly. It was the best single mod I've done to my truck.

Message: Take off like this
Start in drive and floor it and then drop in down in first but make sure that you are still in first when you go from drive to 1st and go untill your about to hit your red line and then got back to drive and thats it. Be carefull and dont mess up. My friend dose that all the time and it helps his off the line take off.

oh yeah, get a intake and some exaust.

Message: Screw all that, just put it in drive. Power brake a little (don't actually spin the tires). When the light turns green let off the brake. Let the tranny shift all by itself is where it will shift most efficiently and have the least overlapping of gears

Message: its pretty hard to get better times by manually shifting a stock auto. take their advice - put it in D, stage truck, release brake, go.

Message: Anyone think about getting a shift kit for the auto? Do they make them for Dakotas?
I am with nate and 4wDakota on the shifting deal. I had a '77 mildly built TransAm auto and that gave me the best results.
