Subject: Whistle "connected" to gas pedal? IP: Logged
Message: Picked up a 2002 Dodge Dakota about 10 days ago. Since day 1, I have a whistle coming from the front of the truck that somehow seems to be "connected" to the gas pedal. Its most noticeable in 1-3 gears (maybe because road noise/radio/AC drown it out in 4-5 gears). I hit the gas to accelerate and the whistle starts. I lay off the gas and the whistle goes away. Any ideas what this could be?
After 10 days, its really been a great truck. Beats my '91 Nissan trade in (with 250K miles) hands down! - Jason

Message: Is the air box on tight? If you have an air leak around the air filter area it will whistle when you accelerate.

Message: have your cat inspected mine was bad and the catalist was stuck in the pipe after the cat which was causing a lot of back pressure and would push it out the joint infront of the cat.

Message: I have a 2001 CC, 3.9 and it has whisteled since day one. The dealer said its a normal sound. Once I put my new muffler on the sound from the muffler was louder so it dosent bother me any more. I haven't had any problems from my car. So the whistling sounds most not be doing anything.

Message: After 11 years of driving mine, I've determined that the infamouse Dakota Whistle is probably the Idle Controller (IAC?) searching for position. Either that or the buterflies on the TB. Ever listened to your Dak idle with the breather off?? Goes from a wihitle to a roar. While the breather is iff stick your thumb over the IAC slot (give it a little throttle when you do this because you are going to stall the engine). Should quieten up. All this time I just thought my truck liked to sing along with the radio. :)

After I installed a cold air intake, the whistle disappeared for good.

Message: So I just brought a Used 02 Dakota CC 3.9 with 40k about 10 days ago and for the 1st time last night i drove it 25 degree temps and as I was approaching 50mph the whistle began. 1st time i have ever heard a car/truck make that sound so I immediately assumed it was something bad so I drove home but i did notice how it only made the noise at high speeds in with the defroster on. I have a 5yr.60000 mile warranty with the dealership with $100 deduct able, what should I do, big problem, little problem???

Message: a whistle that is "connected" to the gas pedal is most likely an air
leak some where. first check you air box, then move up to the tb
make sure the air intake is secured tightly. if there are no leaks
there, its probably a vacuum hose. good luck with finding that one
is all i can say about that. maybe this helped...

Message: As part of another problem (see Subject "At wits end"), I just replaced my intake manifold Gasket. Prior to replacing it, I didn't notice any excessive airflow - afterwards there was an excessive amout of air going through the Idle Controller.
I ended up changing the Crank Sensor and the excessive airflow ended.
In my comments for the other subject, I provide a suggestion of a way to check if yoy have a leaky intake gasket - it could also be used vacume lines.

Message: I have the very same whistle! i asked about this last year and didnt get a reponse, yet it only seems to happen when its cold outside and i am doing about 45 or 65 mph. otherwise there is no whistle. I thought the very same thing that it must be a air leak some where, i checked my TB and new air hat and nothing. I recently changed out my TB for a bigger one and yet same thing, that damn whistle is still there. there are no leaks. the whistle pisses me off really bad.

Message: I have a 2003 Dakota with 3.9L. It whistels in cold weather at around 1700rpm/55mph on steady throttle, it can be changed with throttle position, lift off and it stops.
Dealer changed throttle body, it was gone, but came back about a year later, or did it get cold again. Last winter it was awful and constant. Mechanic was able to duplicate it but was loath to change anything, after my insistence they are going to change throttle body again next week. In warm weather it does not seem to do it.
