Message: Hey guys!
Got a question for you that's bugging me. I went in for my oil change with 200 over the 3000 mile mark, because of a long-distance road trip I did (Orlando Fl. -> Flint Mi. -> Middle of Mi.'s UP -> Orlando Fl.)
Anyway, when they drained the oil it was black. I mean, we're talking tar colored. It still flowed pretty good, it was just black. This is a pretty common occurance really, and I'm starting to scratch my head on it.
Now, the guy at the shop has a modded out S-10 and we started talking. Turns out his S-10 has basically the same engine mods I do, minus a few (BTW, he told me I'd probally whip all over his S-10). He tells me his Chevy was doing the same thing, so he started running the Synthetic/Dino blend and it went away. For $11 I did the same this time, figuring if it works it might save me some repair bills later.
Anyone have any idea -why- it is turning so black though? Only thing I can think is the engine is running richer than normal because of the JET II and IAT relocation, and some of that gas is somehow getting into the crank case and fouling the oil. Compression is good on all cylinders, and my Plenum gasket appears to be ok (no oily film in the intake). The engine uses -0- oil and currently has 28,000 miles on it.
I'm not super concerned, since I plan on rebuilding in a year to a year and a half anyway. I want to challenge Bernds V6 when I'm done. Yeah, right... that'll be the day. :0)

Message: OF course the synthetic blend will be cleaner at 3K because it's made to last longer than the regular dino oil. My oil used to get real black too, maybe it's just how these engines are built. I'm still using dino oil, i just change it every 2K, which is no big deal because i do it myself so it costs like $8. Plus i know some guy at an oil change place didn't leave the plug or the filter loose.
BTW No offense to you oil change guys, i was one once.

Message: I used to change my oil. Kinda hard now when I live in an apartemnt complex and don't have the tools. I normally try to squeeze the change in between classes and eating. :0)
Oh well, I plan on rebuilding the engine within a year of graduating anyway. I'm leaning toward some blowby on the rings or fuel otherwise getting down there. I'll just get better parts when I rebuild and maybe it won't do that... :0)

Message: It is normal for oil to turn black, it doesn't matter if it is dino or synthetic. The oil is suspending contaniments such as carbon deposits that are created in the combustion chamber and slip past the piston rings into the oil. That's why the oil gets dirty and turns black in color. The better the oil filter, the longer it takes for the oil to get dirty. Use a premium oil filter such as ACDelco Ultraguard Gold or Mobil-1. These filters trap particles that are less than 10 microns.

Message: Maybe so, but it never -used- to turn this dark before. Might have something to do with the Florida heat though, I don't know. As long as everything keeps ticking over like it's been doing, I'll just keep changing it out ever 3k.

Message: does blackl oil even do anything harmful to the engine?? that reminds me...i havent changed my oil in god knows how long. 5-8000 not really sure. maybe i changed it at 26,000 and now i have 30,000...hmmmm should know shouldn't I. I tend to think that 3000 mile oil changes are over-rated(even w/o synthetic).

Message: Just means it's dirty. Basically it's got a bunch of fine particles in it that act like sand blasting the interior components if you let it go too long.
Going to long between oil changes can actually slightly effect your performance and gas milage too. As the oil gets thicker the oil pump has to work harder.

Message: Yep, when I meet my wife, she handn't had her oil changed in over a year in her car. So I was a nice b/f and changed it, even bought the parts. She said it ran so much better. Then the next week I flushed the coolent system, she thought she was in heaven. I say 3k is a little extream, I say about 4-5k depending on how its drove.
