Subject: Oil Puff at Start-Up? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1993 Dodge Dakota RC 3.9L V-6 that sometimes will puff smoke when I start it up. It doesn't seem to be burning oil any other time, but I haven't really noticed. What could be causing this?
Could it be something with my valve seals? And if so, how much to fix it?

Message: Typically, when you only get a small amount of blue smoke at start-up, it is caused by valve guide seals that are worn. This is very common on all engines after many miles. Chevy's are known to do it at even low mileage. Basically, a small amount of oil leaks past the valve guide seal into the cylinder, so when you first strt the truck, their is a small amount of oil to be burned. This is not a big problem, and if you are mechanically inclined and have an air compressor you can change the seals yourself in an afternoon. Remove your valve covers, then you plumb the air compressor to the spark plug hole to pressurize the cylinder so the valve stays closed. You will need a valve spring compressor to squeeze the spring, remove the keeper and spring. Remove the old seal, lube up a new seal, and push it in place on the valve stem, then reassemble. You will have to get a book or something for the valve lash adjustment, as you will have to set it after this procedure. Parts for the job, depending on where you buy, should be under $100. Dealer will probably charge somewhere around $500 or more.

Message: So if I were to do this, is there any type of stronger spring I can get for the valves? How much and where could I get them?

Message: Why do you need a stronger spring? Typically, you would install stronger springs with performance cams. I think KRC performance carries them. Check www.speedtweaks.net, there are links there for KRC and a bunch of other performace companies that would have them.
