Subject: Easy air box mod IP: Logged
Message: I put a K&N OEM filter replacement in my stock airbox and removed the "snokel" from the input side of the box. I also removed the rubber barrier along side the radiator so air could flow through. It now sounds like I'm breathing easy and I think it performs better too! The filter was less than $40 at Schmucks. I plan on moving my AIT sensor just above the filter in the stock airbox lid.

Message: Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the IAT sensor only gets used at WOT. So you won't notice a difference in normal driving. Maybe the airbox location is still too hot for there to be that big of a differnce. Some of the Dak owners are putting it in the passenger side fender. Should be a lot cooler there. I did the air filter and IAT sensor at the same time so its hard to tell which one helped. I'm gonna try mine in a cooler location.

Message: I have a 98 3.9L, 5 SPD with over 80K miles on it. I'm not sure but I think the computer continually gets data from the IAT sensor and uses it to adjust mixture and timing. I don't run my truck at WOT that much, so I'm not sure. I have the K&N air filter in the stock box, relocated the IAT to the air box lid, removed the rubber flap at the side of the radiator and the angled schnorkle inlet to the air box. I also modified the TPS so its now adjustable and set at .745vdc, installed a "S" bolt, and spent $2 for some flexible metal hose at the local hardware store. I used this to replace the schnorkle and routed it to the opening made by removing the rubber flap. I secured the whole thing with wire (zip) ties. I also changed out the thermostat to a 180 deg t-stat. I did all the mods at the same time and I noticed a fair amount of performance gain. The only other thing I've added to the truck was a Tornado. I have a 45 mile one way commute to work every day so fuel mileage is important to me. I average 22.7 MPG and on a recent trip to North Carolina, I got 25.3 MPG running 65-70 with the A/C on. Last thing I added to the truck was a OEM cruise control kit. I have to go back to NC in early Aug, so I'll be interested in seeing if the cruise has any effect on the mileage.

Message: Ray I`v seen the tornado on TV & thought it was a gimick. Are you telling me that you actually got better fuel milage just by adding this??????? I`m really interested in the results. Thanks Dave

Message: I saw that too, late night speed channel.
Someone tell me how the "tornado" effect makes it past the TB plates...for starters. And then it dumps into the plenum, and goes up into the runners? I think not....And why would you want to waste energy spinning the air around in circles instead of just sucking it straight in...doing cork screws instead of straight line path...probably can get better gas milage because engine is not getting as much air...
