Message: I have a 2001 Dakota 3.9L V6 that has a major spark knock. I took it to the dealer several times and they flashed the PCM twice. It just got worse. Then they tried to tell me that the spark knock is normal. I don't think so! I took it to another dealer who said it was not normal. Contacted Chrysler and they said it was normal to have it too. Obviously they don't know what they are talking about. It has been to the dealer 6 times for the same issue and is yet to be fixed. They timing has also been checked. The lifter have also been replaced. Chrysler will not help with the matter. Along with the spark knock, it has absolutely no power. Chrysler again said that this was normal. NOT! I am now seeking legal advise from a lawyer. The truck is a lemon. Anyone else have any suggestions?

Message: I've driven my 01 CC 10,000 miles and never had any spark knock.
One of the biggest problems with Mopar Magnums is the belly pan gasket blowing out this is one cause for excessive knock.
I have read of a process of using ultra violet dye to detect the problem you might suggest this to the Dealer.

Message: Mine's never had spark nock either, unless I run crappy gas in it (Or now, anything less than 89 octane).
Whats the condition of the plugs and cap/rotor? I'd be pulling a few plugs to see if they are A) Gapped right, and B) a light tan color. If they aren't a light tan, well, a lot of times you can read a plug's color to determine whats going on.
Might want to try some Autolites in it, they are pretty cheap, shouldn't cost more than $8 to get them (3923, don't let the parts guy talk you out of them. They are a shorter plug and a cooler plug, reduced detonation). If it doesn't work though, just put the stock ones back. But give it a few days to a week to 'learn' the new plugs.

Message: What "exactly" is spark knock?? To clarify things, Is it that very, very minor vibrating-like feel when the engine is at idle? Or do you only feel it when you're actually driving at moderate speeds? When I first bought my '00 cc, there was a little sticker attached to the dashboard that said "..Spark Knock will occur and is normal, the use of higher octane fuels will not change things. Only use regular 87 unleaded fuel.."

Message:
Spark Knock is the CLATTERING sound that you hear when your engine goes under a load, Usually if you let up on the throttle it stops, or sometimes if you floor it and force a downshift it will stop.

Message: I have had the same problem with the spark knock. Some people call it pre-igintion. They say it is due to not burning the octane in the gas correctly. I have tried lower grades of gas, higher grades of gas??? I recently replaced my distributor and had the timing adjusted and it went away for about a week, but it's back. I just can't win either. All plugs, cap and rotory button are new. Does anyone have a good suggestion to end this?

Message: The spark knock and no power is a good indication of a blown belly pan.
Mine just went out. It started as a hesitation when cold like a bad automatic choke. It got to a point if you came upon a hill at 70mph it would drop to 40mph. I used a scan tool and could find nothing. Plugs, cap & button, wires
didn't came. Search internet and found WWW.Genosgarage.com TSB 09-05-00. This is the belly pan service bulletin. Also take a flash light and look down the inside of the throttle body. With the throttle wide open, if you can see oil down inside the manifold, you have a bad belly pan. One other thing to think about is Speedtweaks has a replacement pan that is 1/4 inch thick. The kit will eleminate this problem. This is the way I went.

Message: I have a 2000 V6 2WD Drive that I love but it has also developed a severe spark knock problem over the past year. It started when I moved across 5 states with a load in the back, and the dealer has said that this caused the problem. I don't buy this, since I used to haul a couple hundred lbs of sand around for traction in winter, without a problem. My first oil change after it started knocking, I was low on oil. 5 dealer visits and 2 PCM updates have not corrected the problem, and it knocks hard with 89 octane (anywhere in the 30-50mph range) and it is hardly ever driven under load. 87 octane makes it knock all the time, no matter what engine speed (idling to 75mph). Driving with a passenger or two really ups the knocking, and I don't consider riding with someone being "under load." I can't find a dealer to take me seriously...what can I suggest to them when I take it in again?

Message: BamOpus-
When you moved did you move to a hotter climate?
Try putting in octane booster and see if this helps. If it does use higher grade gas, like 92. Also cool off your engine with a t-stat or a "speed hold" ;) This mite help if you are in a hotter climate. Other than that, do what Deep purple and others say, check your intake manifold plenum pan gasket

Message: I used to be a DC tech and have found several things with magnum spark knock.First the plenum pan is a big problem up till 2000.If it was the pan blowwn out I would repair and do 2 decarbonizations with MOPAR combustion camber cleaner.A also if the leak was bad enough (bigtime oil consumption) I would drive and monitor the upstream O2 sensor, could be fouled. The autolights seemed to help somewhat along with a 180 t-stat.These engines run warm and lean most of the time which is really a big part of the problem.

Message: Thanks to everyone on the board...I finally got a dealer who took a look and diagnosed a blown intake manifold gasket and plenum pan. They wanted to do the decarbonization just like Donger suggested. My question to you now is this: This knocking has been going on for a year, but has only been severe since August. How much engine damage do you think I've done?
