Message: I have a 2002 v6 and in the morning or after it sits a while the engine sounds like the bearings or the lifters are rattling, then it goes away after a few minutes. Is this a normal thing for the v6? I have only 2500 miles on it.

May just be clutch or throwout bearing making a little noise.

Message: I have a 97 Dak Sport 3.9 liter 2WD that I got in 98 with 12,000 miles. From the start till this day it has a rattle when at Idle. I haven't had any problems out of it and now I have 80,000 miles on it. I also happen to be in the Air Force and I am a Auto Mechanic, where we also have Dakota's in the Fleet and most of them have the same noise.
As far as the 2002 v6 is sounds normal the only thing I could tell yuh is if your not happy with the tap on start up. It's under warranty take it back and see what they tell you. It could be as simple as the Oil your using.
The 98 Dak with 91,000 if you have a manual trans or a Auto trans look for your Cat converter on your exhaust making all the noise. My Cat guts gave out at around 40,000 miles and I ended up putting on a High Flow Cat-Back Exhaust on it. But at first it did sound like the Trans was going till I got under the truck while it was running and put my foot aganst the exhaust just down from the Cat and the rattling stoped.....
Well I hope I helped yuh.
I always say if it isn't boke don't fix it.

Message: I have a 99 V6 5 spd. that has a rattle. It only rattles when you taking off in first and/or second gears.
I'm not exactly sure where the rattle is coming from. At first I thought I could hear it coming out of the tail pipe. But I have checked the muffler and the cat and everything appears normal.
Then I started listening closer to the engine noise and cannot really say it is coming from there neither.
It sort of has me dumbfounded.
Anyone have any ideas as to what it may be?

Message: BLeagues,
I can make mine do that too. Generally it means either you don't have enough RPMS at launch or your letting the clutch out too fast for the RPMS you do have. This is on mine at least, I figure it's the Cat's heat sheilds rattling when the engine does it's "Ohmygodhewantstomove?!" low-RPM shake. :0)

Message: ToddW, I can't see it being not enough RPM's or letting the clutch out to fast.
The only reason I say this is because it has just started happening in the last couple of weeks. I have had my Dak now for over three and a half years and have almost 64,000 km's on it. It seems to be getting more noticeable by the week.
Other than knocking or banging on the Cat to listen for loose peices in there. is there any other way to check if it is the Cat? I do not smell the sulphur or rotten egg smell that some other people have said the smelled when their Cat failed.
DakotaDan mentioned something about a throw out bearing. What is this. I have never heard of it before?
Thanks

Message: Throw out bearings squeel, not knock. I know, I had one go bad in my old car. Sounded kind of like a cat stuck in a blender set to 'Puree'. :0/
Let's see if I remember correctly. The throwout bearing is what the clutch actuator fork rides across the main shaft on. I think...

Message: Had my Dakk back to the dealer today. I had booked it in to get:
1) passenger side upper ball joint checked. Sure enough it had failed again. Fourth time in three and a half years. Second time in six months to boot. Replaced under warranty.
2) Oil leak around crank pulley. Had seal leaking, repaired under warranty.
3) Loose nut on timing chain cover. Repaired under warranty.
After I had these things done, knock on wood, no rattle so far. I do not know if it had anything to do with the leaking seal or the loose nut on the timing chain cover. But for now it has dissappeared.
As well thank god for the extended service contract. I know I have not yet got my money back that I had paid for it. But I have a year and a half left on my extended service contract. I figure I should get my money's worth out of it.
I asked the guy behind the counter if DC was going to do a recall on the ball joints and he said that as far as he knows there is nothing planned.
Even though he admitted himself that this is a major safety issue.
I don't know if DC is leaving themselves open for a major lawsuit like Ford and Michelin were with the faulty tires. But they must not be to worried about it obviously.
I wonder if there is a consumer watch dog out there that we could contact and let them know that there is amajor flaw with DC's ball joints for our Daks and maybe get them to look into it and get after DC about doing a recall with proper ball joints, i.e. "Moog" or something to that effect.
Thanks for reading my ramblings.

Message: BLeagues,
How long did it take the dealer to finish all that up on your dak?
I am looking at the same problem on my V6 with the oil leaking from behind the crank pulley! I figured I would try and knock that out at the same time I replaced my timing chain.
Just courious,

Message: LOGIC71B,
I dropped my Dak off on the way to work that morning and picked it up after work. I don't know what the actual time was that it took to repair this problem, but on the work order/bill that you get when they are done, it says 1.7 hours.
That is just for the leak around the crank pulley seal.
On a side note, I just got back from a weekend trip and that rattling noise came back later on Friday evening. I still do not know what it is. If I find out I will let you all know.

Message: I have a 2001 quad cab with the 3.9 v-6. It has knocked from the first day I drove it off the lot. The oil pressure will also drop very low when at an idle. Dodge has done nothing so far. They keep asking me to continue driving it in an attempt to get all the miles I can out of it. The mechanic told me he feels it is a main bearing. I tend to agree because the oil pressure drops. As of today it has 35,550 mile on it. I'm not sure what Dodge is going to do; if anything.

Message: Ron the oil pressure is supposed to drop at idle. when the engine runs at higher rpms the oil pressure goes up, the pump is driven by how fast the engine is going. so the oil thing is ok :)
noises in the v6 engine is common. our v6 engines are noisy. that is just life.

As I had posted earlier, this is something new within the last few weeks to a month and my Dak is over three and a half years old.
I have been to the dealer and they are not sure what it is neither. If I find out I will let you's know what it is.

Message: I now have the results! My name is Dave and I posted the first message, dealer called me today and said that they are putting in a new engine. I was given a 5.9 Ram 4x4 Quad Cab to drive till mine is ready. Dealer said that something was wrong in the bottom of the engine and the truck was too new to tear the motor apart so they ordered a new engine to be installed.

Message: HAVE THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER INSTALLED!!
I ran a copy of the "Magnum V6 - Timing Chain TSB" (found on SpeedTweaks - Tips and Tricks webpage). Gave it to the dealer service rep when I dropped my '92 Dakota off to have it's distributor bushing replaced (80,000 mi). They installed the tensioner as detailed in the TSB and BINGO! This is the first time my truck has not rattled! The fix was not under warrenty, so it cost me $390.00, but IMHO, it was WELL WORTH IT! It sure worked for me!
Thanks!
