Subject: AX-15 Woes - Hey Bernd! IP: Logged
Message: Gots me a problem with my '98 V6 5-speed, and I hear the Berndmeister knows a bit on the subject.
Sometimes in first, particularly after coming to a stop, it kinda shivers like it's trying to engage and pull the truck forward, rapidly and repeatedly. Doesn't do it all the time, and I understand the clutch isn't adjustable. Any clue what it is or what I need to fix? I'm running Mobil 1 in the tranny (and everywhere, actually...), and used to run mineral up until about six months ago. It started about one month ago.
TIA for any help!

Message: How's the fluid look on the slave cylinder? (It's on the firewall under the cowl.) Also...how many miles are on the clutch?

Message: Hey Zaurusman, I have the same problem with my truck. Sometimes in first from a stop it seems to do what you are describing. I have a 2001 5sp RC that will kinda buck in a way like there is some kind of slippage or something. It's very annoying and I know there is really no way to adjust it (clutch) due to the hyrdro setup. I've currently got 6K on the truck and have had it to the shop a few times. They say it's normal....yeah right. BTW, I'm running the stock fluid.

Message: See, I heard from someone else who also had that problem on another board, Raven. Said it had been doing it for over a year and never got any worse, but if it does anything odd I want to fix it! DM says pinging is normal too - normal and likely to blow holes in your pistons... Maybe it's normal for a Yugo's wheels to fall off, but that doesn't keep you from possibly running off the road and hitting a tree.
I'll check the fluid tonight Bernd - thanks for your help. Clutch is original and has 73,000 miles on it.

Message: What weight of Oil are you running in the transmission. The factory recommends GL-5 any weight. I run Mobil Synthetic GL-5 in mine and haven't had a problem. If your running Mobil 1 say 10/40 or 15/50 then that might be your problem as for the transmission woes. Try that and see if it helps.

Message: Unfortunately, I don't know. I took it to an oil change place last swap and just specified synthetic. Ooops...
I have a pump for it now, so I'll swap the fluid myself next time with what you recommend; I've been doing my own fluid changes since then anyway and have done on the engine and diff. Noticed one day after my steering felt funny in the humidity that they weren't lubing my aftermarket upper ball joints, nor my tie rod ends...
I'll check the reservoir tomorrow; been a VERY busy week. Planning on using some Kryon anti-rust chip resitant paint on the entire underside of the truck for rustproofing this weekend anyway, so checking the fluid will be a breeze in comparison!
Thanks for the advice.

Message: Hey, to verify, does Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube SAE 75W-90 sound right? It says it "Exceeds performance requirements of: API Service GL-5" and "Mack GO-G/S". I put this in my diff case last change.

Message: On the bottle it should state if it is GL-4 or GL-5 use GL-5 ONLY for the AX-15 the weights dont matter its the modifiers that do and GL-5 has them

Message: Synthetics are fine in the AX-15. Preferred (for me) is Redline MTL (tried the Royal Purple version but not quite as good as Redline).

Message: Okay guys, I checked the fluid and it's actually a little higher than it is apparently supposed to be. So probably not the problem.
BUT ... I also got under the truck and checked out the case. The whole front piece is covered in black gook - I suspect oil. Which would explain why the engine consumes a quart before each change. But it's been doing that for a couple YEARS! So does it sound like it's leaking out of an engine seal that goes to the clutch? It's on the inside of the housing too, but you can see the rim of the disc (I think that's what that is) and it is clean barring a few specks of rust.
What do you all think? I have also found that if I come to a complete stop when backing up before shifting the lever into first, the problem pretty much goes away. Hmm...
