Subject: 180 Degree Thermostat Too Cold? IP: Logged
Message: I just put in a 180 degree thermostat and was checking to see if I had any diagnostic trouble codes last night, and I got one that says my engine stays cold for too long. Is this going to cause a problem, like preventing the engine from entering closed loop, or should I not worry about it? I have an '89 V6 TBI. Thanks!

Message: Normally, the 180 t'stats will not cause this...the 160's do. What's the outside temp?

Message: Outside temp is about 40-50 degrees. The needle on my temperature guage has stayed below a quarter since I installed it, but that was two weeks ago, and it was already getting pretty cold outside.

Message: You should be fine even with the 180 t'stat in that temperature. Just let the truck warm up a little more in the AM.
Closed Loop is determined by many things...not just the Coolant Temp.
