Subject: Should i change my tranny fluid???
IP: Logged

Message:
I got my '99 3.9 dak about a month ago and it's been running great. It has the auto tranny (not sure which model) and I've been reading about tranny service for these trucks. My tranny seems to be running great though i'm used to standard cars and i wouldn't know what problems to look for in an auto. Anyway, my question is, should I have the fluid flushed or changed out? I checked the dipstick and the fluid looks very fresh (still red/pink in color). I'd like to get a shift kit installed too but may have to wait if I have to change out my tranny fluid. I dunno, i'll check with the dealer tomorrow and see what they say.

The repair/serive books I have looked at for our trucks recommend changing fluid/filter at 30-40k miles depending on how you use it. Towing, ragging on them, change faster. Reg highway miles you can go to 40k. I changed mine at 39k the first time and I did notice slight better shifting.

I always like to talk to someone who does his homework and makes sure good solid basic maintenence gets done. You mentioned looking at the fluid and it looked bright and clean. How did it smell? You didn't mention the milage on your truck. The dealer i go to recommended a change at 17.5K. Called driving in Phx. "severe duty". The book says 37.5 for normal driving. I split the difference at 30K. I DID feel a difference. They did the flush and new fluid thing. Cost $140. but I think it was worth every penny. All good to go to 60K now. If you tow or offroad it get your service done every 17.5 cause all that fun causes lots of heat. Heat kills the tranny fluid in a big hurry. Hope this helps.

anyone got any info on Manual fluid? I refuse to spend $10/qt on Mopar fluid, especially when you need 4-5 qts...

thanks

Jason,

try Royal Purple tranny fluid. they are like a couple of dollars cheaper. the guys from the tech line said that they would work great with Dakota's tranny. i have no problem with my tranny and it's 2 years old. its been running cold since and i live in Hawaii. just my 2 cents.

Change your fluid. You get to drop the pan and see what may be floating in it, and while your there you can change the filter. If you have it done at a shop, they can adjusts the bands. Not recomended for the average backyard mechanic. Need a little more knowledge on that but it can be done.
