Subject: FREE: Better Sounding Engine!! IP: Logged
Message: Today I was looking at my 3.9, and I decided to see what would happen if I removed the snorkel that went from the airbox to just behind the passenger side headlight. (it's a 2002). I started the engine, and revved it up, (after removing the snorkel) and the sounds coming from the hood remind me of my 73 firebird. It gets a little boomy really high on the RPMS, but I had two people at school ask me if my truck was really a 4-banger (earlier thread). Sounds really nice, and will tide me over untill I can get some money together for an intake...
Just thought I would pass it along.

Message: Oh I need to clearify something, my truck is a 6..I just tell people at school that I race that it's a four-banger, so when I beat um' (happens fairly often) they feel really bad losing to a 4... (no badges to tell otherwise) made a freshman in his dad's camaro turn bright red.. (it was an 97ish v6 auto)... the kid doesn't talk sh*t about truck anymore...

Message: reality check---
1. dakotas can beat ANY camaros unless they are towing a boat
2. all daks before 2001 have the engine size right next to the headlights so i suppose u stole one of those wimpy magnum power decals from a 4 and put it over ur V6 right???
3. i took out the entire airbox and the engine did sound cool but its no 73 firebird.

Message: Reality Check:
No the aircleaner is not removed... just the silencer tube that runs into it... It really not that complicated it's just a simple piece of black tubing that is shaped like an L... Also it's sound REMINDS me of my 73' Firebird, the last thing I would want in my daily driver is an engine that rumbles so loud I couldn't hear the great infinity speakers..

Message: I removed it on both my dakotas. Also removed the rubber flap between the rad and the support for a direct shot of cold air, sounds pretty good to.

Message: I took it one step further than that.
I removed the "silencer tube" and the rubber mat behind the head light assembly, then I removed the bottom section of the box, and enlarged the hole to as big as I could get it. Since I still had a little left over "grill" I cut and formed a piece into the opening to and rivited it in to prevent large debris from hitting the air filter element. I suggest you do the same, (at least some kind of protective grill. Nothing is going to hinder your performance more than a big leaf getting in their and blocking air flow to the filter. To get a lttle more acceleration out of it install a k&n filter element in your factory box.

Message: Actually... a lightly modified 3.9L Dakota will run pretty well against a Camaro/Firebird with the V6. I raced my friend in his 95 V6 Camaro and he beat me by about 3/4 car length (1/4 mile on a backroad the highschoolers used to always race at). Top end he whoops my ass though...

Message: Immediately to the left of the radiator is a little rubber flap about 4" wide...that's the rubber "mat." Remove it and it'll allow cooler air to flow into the engine compartment.
I'll see if I got a picture to show you exactly what I'm talking about...
