Subject: muffler vs. catback

Here's yet another exhaust question. I have a 2000 Dak 3.9L with modified TB, Intense intake, IAT, 3923, 8MM wires and I'm reading thousands of these posts regarding loss of torque with a 3" single (no duals) catback. I don't plan on any more mods. Is the 3" pipe too much for this setup. I drive mostly in the low rpms and am looking to make the mod primarily for mpg. Or does replacing the stock muffler and leaving the 2-1/2 stock pipes the answer?
Bernd - your thoughts please and anyone elses.

if all your looking for is mpgs then just replace your muffler... the 3" exhaust is more for a supercharged truck.
