Subject: Advice concering a V6 to V8 swap IP: Logged
Message: Here's the scoop. I've got a '91 dakota auto, w/a longbed. Pretty much everything's stock, and herein lies the problem. The V6 that currently resids underhood is simply not enough power for a truck of this size. I've found a 318 for relativly cheap (it's currently in an '85 ram, auto). The truck itself has roughly 145k miles, but the engine only 10k (rebuild, reputible shop). I'd like to keep the V8 carburated (my V6 is TBI). I'd love to drop her in......any advice? Any known pitfalls I may encounter?
Long live the Dodge!

Message: I've never done one and i'm not a mechanic but I'm guessing as long as you have the proper mounts and the tranny mates up, it shouldn't be too bad, especially since you're staying with a carb setup.

Message: there is going to be some conflict in the area of the fuel system and ignition. You will have to get rid of the electric fuel pump and put in a mechanical pump (should already be on the 318). You will have to route different fuel lines and such. The alternator might be different and such... not quite sure. The one on the 318 might just not be powerful enough for your truck and if the V6 on will bolt down do that. You might still need your computer for the sensors to work if they're all electronic.... or if they are not it would be easier.
but.....
if you are just looking for it to bolt in, then yes, yes it would.

Message: Gettin ready to put a premag 408 (stroker) in my MPI 3.9 94.
You can use the stock fuel pump you will need a good quality regulator.
You will have a major problem using your serpentine belt system (which I recomnd using) on a premag. You will need to do a mag head conversion or get MP's new Comando heads, they have the proper holes in em for the mags alt and p/s pump brackets.
In short, DO ALOT OF RESEARCH as this isnt a swap for novice mechanics.
Contact me directly if you want, I will give you all part #'s and stuff I have tried so far.

Message: Thanks for all the help guys.
I'd probably just as soon use the mech fuel pump, save the hassle of replacing one in the tank later on...
As far as computer stuff goes - that's where I get nervous. The 91's were of course pre-mag, but the computer does handle some things. The thing it mostly has to do with is ignition/injection. (or so I think...) Aside from those - which would be moot with a carbed 318 - do you know of anything else? In other words, hasta la vista to el computer? Would it work?
Checked into tranny, she'll bolt righ in.
Also, FazDak, why would you recomend using a serp belt? Advantages?
I checked into alternater, and ac comp and both should bolt right on. I didn't check out the fan however, It's the clutch style and the 318's not. Will I be able to swap that? (i'd like to)

Message: Intense, yes they would "bolt on" but there is some work involved to get the proper oiling to the rockers.
Premags oil thru the oil feeds in the head and mags oil em thru the lifters and pushrods like GM.
I had an article on it but have misplaced it.
I will tell you that mag heads outflow ported 340 heads because they were designed better, so usin em is better.
You will need AMC 360 lifters and hollow oilin push rods, then there is somekind of drilling that need to be done to the block or heads.
BTW, when did you scrap the Turbo idea and decide on S/C? I havent been on here much, what did I miss dude?
Chris, serpentine is a way more reliable belt setup. You will have to adapt an old style P/S pump if you decide to use V belt setup. Also some modifyin to the wiring to accept the old style alt.
You will also have some problems with that AC, it wont have idle compensation with carb, you can make something up but you need some skills for that. You will have to go into the tank if you dont use the elec pump because the elec pump wont let fuel passed when disconected from power. I would use your stock elec pump as it will outflow just about any mechanical pump.
Hope this helped guys, Scott

Message: i knew that there was some sort of drilling because the older engines had the rail type rollers (freaking expensive) and the newer ones werent. If you could please try to find that it would be nice.. but my dad is just thinking of buying a magnum short block from an engine place down here.
thanx fazdak!!!!
got the supercharger really cheap had to do it... installed in 2 hours!..... selling turbo

Message: The mag head is a good idea on the LA if you have the time and energy to put em on.
I know a guy who had it done and his little 318, runs REAL GOOD(if you know what I mean).
I will try and dig up that article.
Good deal on the S/C, let me know how this thing works, I dont have the 408 together yet and am still fond of the little 6, it just needs more damn TQ!!
You gonna run the NX with it or did you sell the NX?
