Message: Does the tranny have to be swapped too when upgrading to a 360 engine? I'm thinking that it does... but would like some confirmation from those who have done this, thanks.

Message: Oh yeah,
The tranny is just too weak, the 360 has a heavier tranny than the 318. The V6 tranny would be under some serious stress. I'm not sure about the bolt pattern either.
But, if your going to do it, do it right and swap the tranny.
IMHO Lesley, you should put the $3000+ that you would spend on the 360 either towards a down payment on a new or used R/T or (if you want to keep your beloved truck) just get a supercharger or turbo, a little head work and a blower matched cam. An engine swap and all the wiring that goes into it will take away the reliability of your truck. To do it right and work properly costs big $$$.
Best of Luck,

Message: "An engine swap and all the wiring that goes into it will take away the reliability of your truck"
Umm..can you explain this for me? getting the donor motor and tranny with the 97 harness and ecu the truck would be just like it came from the factory with the 360. The only difference would be the front springs, which she allready has taken care of with the drop springs which are v6/v8 generic. The 360 trucks also come with a 9.25 rear. Swapping in a stock 360 with an auto the 8.25 she has will hold up fine.
The v6 tranny will physically work...but with your lead foot and some drag strip passes =-P it will start to show its weakness. Since the truck was available with a v8 from the factory the swap really isnt that hard. especially when you have a mechanic like Lesley ,who does these swaps every day.
but a v6 with ported heads..big cam and a turbo would be hella cool.

Message: LOL! Oh gawd, I sure wouldn't be doing it myself! Billy Thompson will be doing the swap for me. He's done a few of them. I've just arranged to get a low mileage 98 for $750 (BARGAIN!!) and the drivetrain is available too. At home I have an 8.25 3.92 ring and pinion, so I am getting there as far as extras go. This engine isn't going anywhere for a while. It's sitting in my tool room for a year or so while I can afford goodies for it. I'd like to mess around with it a bit, a great learning opportunity too. :)

If you can get the tranny do it... using the 8.25 rear will be fine...but if you can get a good 9.25 r/t rear from the rt it will be stronger and allready have 3.92 gears and a suregrip in it. the problem Is i'm not sure if you use the rt tranny and 8.25 rear which drive shaft ya need. I'm not sure if the u joints where it connects to the rear are different from rear to rear..also if the output from the trannys are the same....

Message: I realize its very do-able with all the wiring and such but still you have to run all that wiring to the computer and to the motor (injectors, switches, sensors) Its a good bit of work. Yes, a professional can do it right and you shouldn't have problems, the fact is for the money upgrading the V6 would be better. For $3000 you could make the V6 scream. For $3000 if you get the engine and tranny and installation you would be cutting yourself short somewhere.
For your daily driver and main source of transportation you gotta go with reliability and a 6# supercharger on the V6 would still be very reliable.

Message: Hey all. I did this swap mySELF about 2 months ago, with a lil stand back and supervise from my uncle. We changed my 97 v6 to a 99 360. (i bought the whole truck wrecked.) Ok, first...the motor etc will mount fine. We changed trans and rearend, drive shaft etc so i dont know about how the 6er trans would work or not. But heres the burner. You better get the whole truck. because the hardest part of the swap, was the fact that I HAD to change the inner wiring harness. the whole harness. this is not FUN..trust me. also had to go to the new style headlight switch. Also had to change the guage cluster, because with my v6 gauge, got all kinds of hairy things, for instance, you know the lil blue light when you have your brights on? it STAYED on. even when the truck was off. So after i basically switched EVERYTHING and i mean everything from the r/t, suspension and all....down to the 3rd brake light with cargo lights.... the only problem i have is my reverse lights dont come on. and oh yea, i had to use the brake booster off my 6 cyl, because the one on the r/t was bad. i think that (and 30 beers) is what happened to the r/t in the first place. if you guys have any questions....i dont care a bit to help anyway i can... jameslr@bellsouth.net if you want to email me...if you want pictures or anything ill take some.
oh yea. i gave 4000 dollars for the totalled r/t, and still had to buy 2 17 in rims, tires, a radiator, a condensor, the trans coolant lines, a fan , and a fan clutch. (that stuff was busted in the wreck. so i tied up quite a bit of $$$....i coulda made the 6 faster than the 5.9,,,,but when youre 22, and you want something, and you can get it,, usually you wont take advice from anyone... :)

Message: Another thought, buy a junked out truck on ebay (Leslie's second home) and drop the 360 in it. Then you can work at your own pace time and money wise. You can get GenII's for under a $1000 easily. And even some salvage title GenIII's.
Pic up a GenII with a 4 cyl for next to nothing and drop in a 360 with an older style 3 speed auto (stronger, cheaper and easier to work on than an OD) and you'd have a damn fun second truck.

James, thanks for the heads up. I'm familiar with the brights problem, it's the daytime driving lights module. The wiring harness is all included, as is the pcm. I'm hoping to get the tranny too, I'll have to see how my money holds out :)

are probably the most respected custom, race and
show car mechanics, particularly mopar, in this
area. Also nice, honest guys. They have done
several swap, I was there for part of one of them.
Most of the swaps they have done were pre-magnum,
but I have seen 2 of the magnum swaps they have
done.
Sicminds, it will be at least a year. The headers
might already be spoken for, and depending on how
much of a rebuild gets done on the new engine, I
might just buy two more injectors. Otherwise, I
will definitely let you know.

Message: OK retards, i am about to be putting a 360 into a 95 dak 3.9. the v6 tranny bolts up, remember the v6 is based on the v8 all the externals accesories are the same. it is ALOT cheaper to go FASTER with a v8. dollar for dollar the v8 will ALWAYS WIN. I work at the dodge dealership. i know on the gen 2 you just have to change the wiring harness from the bulkhead forward. the engine mounts are the same. if you use the v6 tranny it must be rebuilt to handle the power, the v6 tranny is a 904 with elec, overdrive. 904's can handle over 500 hp. the stock 8 1/4 axle will hold, it is also good up to around 500 hp. you must get a 360 flywheel. as well as a r/t oil pan, they are different. the distributor is the same, cap and rotor are not. now please don't post about something you have not looked into. oh and dodgeboy, ignore all of this, good luck lesley and let me know how it turns out. i'm shootin for the 1st of the year for mine. it should run low-mid 13's and then i might put 100 shot to it to run some 12's. later
