Message: The reason I ask is because I have always used 10W40 in every vehicle I've owned, but my 3.9 seems to be a little tempermental about it. When I roll up on 3K on my oil my 3.9 lets me know it's getting close to needing fresh oil.
It never fails, every 3k (not 3,200 or 3,500)it starts to run "lose" in the power band.

Just my 02 cents.

Message: Kryp2nite,
Thanks. I would check mine but I am not using the origional. It was stripped out between the cap and the base so I had to "thrash" it to get it off. Lets just say It needed replacing!
The manufacturers don't always have the best answers though! I run my engine hard every time I'm behind the wheel, so oil is a big factor. The wait in this engine is making a really big factor in performance. Either that or I just need to find another 3.9L mag block and build one up to my standards.
Hey, on that note; does any one know were I can get a good deal on a complete bock in good rebuildable condition? No top side (heads, intake), just the lower end. I dont even need to front either (water pump, brackets).

Logic,
I know you are asking about 5W- vs 10W- and I believe a vehicle owner should always try and stay within the recommended manufacturers guidlines, adjusted for geographic location, driving conditions and driving style.
Here is an earlier post from the General Board which explains viscosity grade:
--------------------------------------------------
A lot of people have emailed me asking about 0W-30 so I am reposting this. Here is your answer:
" 0W- " is a viscosity GRADE, not a viscosity MEASUREMENT. When testing for cold fluidity, the temperature is lowered approximately 5 degrees centigrade between each test.
The Cold Crank Simulator Apparent Viscosity is tested at:
-20 C for 10W-
-25 C fpr 5W-
-30 C for 0W-
It is my understanding that the oil has to be labelled at the lowest temperature it meets the specifications.
It may not be long before someone comes out with a " -5W-30 " which would correspond with -35 C.
Hope this provides you with valuable information,

Message: Hey i have a 1993 v6 dakota. When the motor warms up after driving for about 10min, at idle the oil idiot light comes on and the oil pressure gauge drops, but as soon as i give it gas it goes back up... I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem with the 93 v6 motor.. I have had to run 50w oil with oil treatment to kinda help the problem.. But when the oil light comes on and the gauge drops the motor doesnt sound like its gona blow. Is it just a faulty gauge in the dash?? the oil pump was changed and its gone though 4 oil sending units. If you have had the same problem plez write me back.. thanks..

What oil filter are you using? I found that the fram filter was a big factor in my oil pressure dropping at idle. The fram filter, especially with treatments, have a habit of clogging.

Message: Dear Logic71b,
Thanks for writing me back.. I have been using a napa oil filter. I never though about using a fram. Ill have to try that out, what oil do u recommend i use? Should i continue to use stp oil treatment.. Let me know that u think.. I should say that this problem doesnt happen all the time, its weird cuz you would think if there is no pressure the motor would go all to heck.
thanks,

Message: Slip Kustomz,
No, I try to stay clear of the fram oil filters. Sure they say that they filter better but they clog way to easy.
I started using the STP filter and every once in a while I will use the STP oil treatment. I also run Quakerstate 10W40 high milage. I just rolled over 100K.
What ever brand oil you use is strictly up to you. I prefer the Quakerstate, I've been using it for about 10 years now in more than 5 different vehicles.
Try using the STP oil filter on your next oil change and see if that helps out. Do note that at idle your oil pressure will drop slightly. Mine still does, just not as bad now.

Yea know that i think about it ive tried fram, i and remember changing the filter a week later due to poor oil pressure. Ill try that stp oil filter. I too just rolled over 100k and have had the problem before the big 100k mark, I'll give the 10-40w a try, otherwise ive been using kendal 20-50w or just 50w. Thanks again,

Logic71B,
I waited for a while before posting here but now I will add my .02,
What Viscosity Should You Use?
In most cases you can (should) simply use the manufacturers' recommended viscosity grade. However, if I may be so bold, AMSOIL Series 2000 0w-30 has been designed specifically to be used for applications which recommend 5w-30 or 10w-30 viscosity grades. If you looked at the technical specs for each oil you would notice that the 0w-30 synthetic oil has a very high viscosity index which indicates that it will maintain its viscosity through a wide range of temperatures and extreme conditions. Also, its operating temperature range is quite broad. If you were able to take a look at our comparison chart you would see that this range is broader than the 5W-30 or 10w-30 of most other brands of oil.
-----
A bit of information regarding viscosity:
"0W- " is a viscosity GRADE, not a viscosity MEASUREMENT.
When testing for cold fluidity, the temperature is lowered
approximately 5 degrees centigrade between each test.
**Manufacturers Recommendation + Driving Conditions/Habits + Climate = "your oil"

A viscosity index rating has nothing to do with the amount of additives; however, it does have something to do with the formulation of the oil and the quality of the basestocks used by the manufacturer.
