I recently bought a 94 Dakota with 170,000 mikes on it. It seemed to run fine the day I bought it and drove it home. I planned to use it as a dump runner and things. Anyway, the second time I used it to haul something I noticed the oil pressure light was on as I was leaving Lowe's with a load of lumber. No biggie, I'll top it off when I get home. I started noticing what sounded like "lifter slap" getting louder and louder. Eventually, as I was going up a hill, the engine cut off. No huge bang, no clouds of smoke, just nothing. I eventually got it to crank again, at home after I got it towed, and I hear a loud rhythmic banging sound. Any ideas what I'm looking at? Broken piston? Timing chain? I took the valve cover off and the rods seem to be in good shape. I'm slowly but surely getting it torn down and I'm looking for some ideas what to check first.

Any help would be great!

Is the noise coming from the bottom of the engine, or the top? If you have already pulled the valve covers, it sounds like you spun a bearing. Pull the oil pan, and start checkin the rods and crank. See if there are any bearings squeezed out between the caps and journals, wiggle the rods, see if any of them are really loose. 170,000..sounds like ya need a rebuild regardless. My 2 pennies worth

Spun a bearing...... sounds like a definite. Hope you didn't pay too much for it. Sounds like the dude was selling it for a reason.
