Subject: cat and muffler cutoff IP: Logged
Message: I cut my cat convertor off about a month ago and last week cut my muffler off and replaced it all with straight pipe. Sounds real nice and loud but heres the problem. My dad and my cousin both said that without the cat and/or muffler that the engine will burn out with no back pressure. I figure straight pipe gives a better flow what good does back pressure do. Well I dont know much about engines so what do you guys think? Should I get a high flow cat or instead get a flowmaster 40 or 50 series muffler, or leave it the way it is! I have a 93 dakota 3.9 v6 4x4 and all opinions appreciated, thanks!

Message: Its possible you could burn a valve. Put a muffler on it as well as a cat. I think open manifolds sound like crap especially on a v6.

Message: i don't think you'll burn anything off, it just sounds real crappy, and tends to attract the cops (because you are making so much noise). also, don't forget you are breaking federal law by NOT having the cat on. if you want to increase power, and still want to cut emmissions, look at getting a high-flow cat (through speedtweaks.net), and a high flow muffler. you are also going to build more power that way because you are providing backpressure to the system. right now, although you have built up the horsepower, you've transfered your torque up the curve.
you'll find a lot more power with a little more backpressure.

Message: i just had my exhaust replaced sat, and put a catco hi flow converter on with no muffler and it sounds good but needs some sort of muffler to deepen the tone alittle, but over all am happy with the performance. could use alittle bit more low end torque though.
