Subject: Help, ASAP! IP: Logged
Message: Hey, i just picked up my new (to me, 88 3.9L 4x4, 5spd) dodge dakota yesterday. I drove it home with no problems, and this morning drove it to a nearby NAPA to get some tune-up parts. I replaced the plugs (gapped to .035), distrib cap, distrib rotor, the wires looked pretty new so left them on, belts, and changed the oil, and did a few more lube type things. And just now, i went to start it up, for the first time since i did the work, and it wont start. It turns over alright, and every once in a while it will sound like its about to fire up but it wont! I've check each wire and they are all getting spark. But now im kinda stupmed because i didn't really mess w/ anything else fuel related or anything, so im not sure what to check next. It smells like its getting fuel, and i checked and the plugs aren't fouled... If anyone has any suggestions, it would be really great, thanks a lot,
-Jason

Message: This sounds familiar to me! I had the same thing happen. Turns out that I didn't put the spark plug wires in the right places on the cap when I transferred them one by one. I had each wire one plug off. Check to make sure you have all the wires in the right places on the cap.

Message: I have a 93 with the 3.9 and it does that same thing every so often. I think the breather is grounding something, I can loosen the breather and move it and it will fire up again. I don't know if this is your problem but it works for me!!! Good luck with her.

Message: Larry, do you mean the crankcase breather in the middle of the valve cover on the left cylinder bank? If you do, then it can't be grounding. It's not electrical. I don't know if the '93 changed or something from 1988, but what you're describing with the breather can't happen on an '88. On the '88 3.9, if you have to move the crankcase breather to get it started again, then you probably need to replace your breather, or look for something near the breather that you could be moving while moving the breather. I don't know if the crankcase breather is what you're talking about, so please correct me if I am wrong! Good luck JLW!

Message: ORIGINAL POSTER -- plug wires, did the same thing while changing mine and I even marked and replaced one at a time... Don't know how I pulled that one off... All were off by one like Spyder343's were...
OTHER POST -- o2 sensors and computer are the only two I can think of...

Message: sounds like if it happeded after the plugs, you've got the wires on wrong. double check em all - 165432 firing order, clockwise rotation. with 1,3,5 being #1, drivers side closest to radiator.
since it was starting before the tuneup, this is where I'd check 1st.
good luck!

Message: Are you sure you put the rotor inside the distributor cap?
I had a friend who had done a tune up and couldn't start his vehicle. So I stop by and looked at it a while. Then I look through the boxes of things he bought and find the rotor still new in the box. Boy he felt bad, but it was a quick fix!

Message: WADAK read the post again the engine is COKD so a warming up coil ain't it it ran fine untill he CHANGED THE CAP THEN IT WON'T START, wires are most likely inthe wrong holes.
