Message: I think Bernd and I found the 1-2 shift problems with these autos... or for some. My auto has been acting funny... shifting late out of first gear and such. Bernd and i took a drive with the scanner plugged in and read the tranny's sensors. Showed up that the line pressure wasnt getting that hight and bernds first thought was the governor pressure sensor or transducer. BUT after looking further into it we found out that there is a second speed sensor (or at least on a 98) in the tranny. I had already replaced the one in the differential to see if that would cure it. So today i went and bought the new sensor "speed output sensor" pn 1-04800879 and started wrenching. It is located in the middle of the tailshaft on the driver's side. Get a bucket because it is also a drain plug and you will loose about a quart of fluid. I took the old sensor out and investigated it. It has a magnetic tip to grab metal shavings and that had so much crap (crap is defined as; metal sludge, garnish, and crap) that you couldnt see the tip. I put the new one in and man did it change everything... works like new! Now if you cant or dont want to get the new piece ($21 here) then maybe you can just clean that tip off and it will work fine...
hope this help out all you auto tranny guys (and lesley)!
any questions just ask!

Message: easy.... just get a pan (to catch fluid), cresent wrench and some towels...
1. place pan under sensor
2. unclip harness from sensor
3. loosen sensor with cresent (turn counter clockwise)
4. remove sensore with hand
5. watch fluid pour out (wow.....)
6. replace with new one (turn clockwise)
7. plug in harness
8. refill tranny with dexron III fluid (dont overfill!)
9. TA DAH!!!!!
finished

Message: The inherent problem on these transmissions (known for quite some time already) is the Governor Pressure Solenoid. In gregs case...the speed sensor on his overdrive housing was bad.
Greg...you're line pressure was still a tad low...you may want to replace the Governor pressure solenoind as well (include the Transducer)...unless you feel it's shifting where it should at WOT. Replace them when you install the shift kit though.

Bernd or IntenseDak39,
How much is the Governor pressure solenoind you were also saying about? My uncil overhauls tranys so i'm pretty sure if myself and him get under the truck and tool around we can do it without taking it to the shop and paying a arm and a leg. ALSO, will the 97 tranny be the same as greg's? I sure hope this works i'm seriously about sick of this crap! ;) Thanks guys.

Message: i was just suggesting something to look at first. It is the easiest thing to do to it. If you have to replace the solenoid then you have to remove the valve body and such. I would just check that output speed sensor (located in tailshaft on the passenger side) and clean it off. It has that magnectic tip to catch all the bad metal shavings and i think mine just had too much crap on it.
Bernd,
it shifts wonderfully now! BUT.... as you noticed that throttle valve linkage was a little tight so it shifts into gear sooner than it should. With that sensor all bad it would shift late so that throttle valve linkage adjustment didnt do anything. When i come back down (this thursday or the week after), maybe we can run you scanner back on it and see what its doing.

| RE: ATTN: AUTOMATIC TRANNNY OWNERS IP: Logged
Message: Greg: Your line pressure was still lower than "spec". Change out the Governor Pressure Solenoid and Transducer (and we'll put some decent ATF in there as well).
Rooknute: You don't have to remove the valve body to change any of the sensors. Just remove the pan, six bolts for the Governor pressure solenoid (it's got a retaining cover on it), and then remove the Transducer (on the side of the Gov Press Solenoid block). Takes about 30 minutes to do that if the trans is cold. Let it drain for a bit as well to get all of the old fluid out of there...might as well give it a service in the process (filter and fluid).
Fuild Types (2.1 gallons of it):
ATF+3 = up to 1999
ATF+4 = 2000+ (It's semi-synthetic fluid)

Bernd, it was your earlier posting about the gov.
pressure solenoid that tipped my mechanic off to
the problem with mine. He also replaced the
transducer.
It runs great now, but I will keep your advice

Message: Just curious if this repair would be covered by factory warranty. My 2000 sport CC 4wd has been slipping 1-2 gears but only seems to do it when its cold. Fluid levels are fine and was worried since Ive heard all the BS about the 1500 trannys. But have 7yr warranty and since I was heading in for some recalls was wondering if I could hit them up with that as well?

Message: yeah lesley... i am only trying to make a suggestion to people. I think its just something you could clean up and work just fine. Its just that it has that magnetic tip that collects all metal partical and i would suggest cleaning it because metal particals inside the tranny is bad :-(

What are you using to scan the tranny with?
I just got the OBD2 cable for the ol laptop. Took it out to the drag strip and am now trying to figure out why my truck feels and runs like a turd.
The seed output sensor I guess is next. Thanks for the info guyz!

Message: Hey! While most of the good folks are on here. I have a problem. I have a 92 CC 3.9L with the A500 and she's showing signs of illness. When I start her for the first time of the day to get her up the hill I live on takes me to about 2500 on the tach. I know part of it is the clutch fan that sounds like a 747 at take off but I know it's not healthy. It's like 50 feet to the corner and she's acting better already and I'm good when the fan goes off 3 blocks down the road. But I know the tranny is going, noticeably less power, downshifts at the smallest throttle input on the highway. Is there anything I can do for it? I know this is confusing but I'm 19 and can't afford to mess with too major of repairs. At least not now.

Message: 92dakotahd,
thats what my truck was doing. I dont know if you have the same sensor i replaced but i would look at the speed output sensor. My truck would take forever to leave first gear (2000-2500rpm) for the first time after startup but then would shift normally.

Message: We recommend replacing the sensors regardless when installing any type of shift kit (or Valve Body with Shift Kit pre-installed). The reason the option (with or without sensors) is for the newer transmissions (2001+ with low miles).
How to check it out: Watch the Governor pressure, watch the shift points, and watch how it reacts on lockup.
