Subject: Running hot IP: Logged
Message: I have a '99 3.9, and it has always run just below the halfway mark on the temp gauge. Starting friday though it began to creep up. Depending on how much I drive, and if I have the A/C on the temp will go as far as 3/4 up the gauge or higher. The thermostat is good, and it has plenty of coolant. Any ideas what could be causing this?? It usually takes about 20 minutes of driving before the temp will begin to rise. I appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Message: hmmm....mine did that too for a while. Finally she just turned off all together. I looked down and my engine temp guage was all the way to the right. My thermostat was bad. They tend to do that before they go i guess. I pulled the sucker out and went on my merry way with the engine temp guage all the way to the left. Can't be good for the truck. Wasn't too comfortable in the winter. I had no heat.

Message: My beater car that i drive to work did the same thing to me about a month ago. Drove me nuckin futs! I changed the thermostat and that didnt help. There was plenty of coolant so that wasnt it either. I finally gave in and took the car to the mechanic. Believe it or not, it was the radiator cap. Im not exactly sure what was wrong with the cap, but after he installed the new one, she's ran fine ever since.

Message: Had the same problem on my 98 Dak. Ran hot...even after the t-stat change and new antifreeze. It wasn't until I drove 200 miles one day that I realized my new hoses looked like they were going to burst. The upper hose had a bulge in it.
Got to my friends house and waited to for the truck to cool down before I realized that the only thing I did not change that day was a radiator cap. Went to Auto Zone and got one and changed it. Had no more problems. Drove the 200 miles home with the temp gauge to the left of the center.
Radiator caps do go bad...and they don't cost that much so I would suggest when changing the anitfreeze, change the cap too.
